This weekend, the West Babylon Volunteer Fire Department proudly joined the Town of Babylon for the renaming of 10th Street as EMS Deputy Chief David Burke Memorial Way.

David joined the West Babylon Fire Department in October 2001 after six years of service with the Jericho Fire Department. Over more than two decades in West Babylon, he served in numerous leadership positions, including Lieutenant and Captain of the Rescue Squad, Trustee, Training Officer, and CPR Instructor. His passion for EMS and commitment to mentoring others left an indelible mark on our department and community.

Dave also served nearly 37 years with the FDNY, retiring as Deputy Chief of Division 9. A proud 9/11 responder, he answered the call during our nationโ€™s darkest hours and ultimately made the ultimate sacrifice as a result of illnesses connected to his service at the World Trade Center.

While his accomplishments were extraordinary, those who knew Dave best will remember him as a devoted husband, father, friend, and mentor. His legacy lives on through his beloved wife, Rosemarie, his children Daniel and Megan, and the countless lives he touched throughout his career.

This weekend, the West Babylon Volunteer Fire Department will join the Town of Babylon - Government as they host a ceremonial street renaming in honor of our own David Burke.

In addition to serving our Department for 24 years, including a term as Captain of the Rescue Squad, David also served as a New York City Fire Department (FDNY) EMS Deputy Chief. He retired in June 2025 after a tremendous 38 year career. In July 2025, he passed away due to a 9/11-related illness.

Please join us at 10:00am on Saturday, June 6th, on 10th Street between 14th and 15th Avenues, as we gather to ensure his memory lives on.

On Saturday, April 18th, the West Babylon Volunteer Fire Department joined the Town of Babylon as they hosted a street renaming in honor of our own Ex-Captain Philip Canfora, Jr.

Philip proudly served his community and our Department for 46 years, a calling he truly loved. He began his service as a youth member of our Junior Fire Brigade from 1971-1974, and later joined Beaver Engine Company 2 on September 5, 1976, following in his fatherโ€™s footsteps. He served actively until his passing in October, 2022.

Philip also served as a member of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office for 33 years and was an elite
member of the Sheriff's Emergency Response Team.

We thank the Town Board of the Town of Babylon for bestowing this great honor upon one of our own, and authorizing the ceremonious changing of the
name of 3rd Street between 12th and 13th Avenues as Captain Philip Canfora Jr. Memorial Way.

Yesterday, the West Babylon Volunteer Fire Department gathered for our annual Memorial Day services.

The driving rain served to further the solemn occasion, in which we paused to remember the brave men and women of service who are no longer with us.

In addition to honoring the members of our armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation, we also reflected on our own members who left us this year. We remember:

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธEx-Captain Garry Mowbray
๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Ex-Captain David Burke
๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Ex-Chief Arthur McNally
๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Ex-Chief Richard Kroebel
๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Ex-Captain Vincent Bethell
๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Firefighter Dennis McMahon
๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Firefighter Martin Reiman
๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Firefighter Anthony Esposito

We are forever grateful for their service to our community. May they all continue to rest in peace.

Today, we pay tribute to those lost, acknowledge their sacrifices and recall them and their families.
