Another South Bay Elementary School project! Ms. Levy wants hands-on kits so her students can better understand STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields.

My students need hands-on tools so they can make concrete connections to STEM goals. The items include two Snap Circuits Green, one Snap Circuits Rover, and two Makey Makey kits. I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library -Jorge Luis Borges This statement has never been more true…

Mrs. Ross at South Bay Elementary School is raising funds to create a technology project to inspire students to tell their own stories through film and Lego. Donate here!

My students need an iPod, a mini tripod, and LEGO sets. Having these materials donated will enable them to create and make stories they read and write come alive! I have a passion for helping students to become lovers of learning. My goal is for my students to be excited about learning and be eager…

Thank you to everyone who voted for Emily Ladau '09 to receive a wheelchair-adapted van! Because of the number of votes, she became a semi-finalist. Only four of the several hundred semi-finalists won a van, however, and she wasn't one of them.

Many people, though, still feel she deserves a van, and she has set up a crowdfunding campaign to raise money to buy one for herself and her mom, who is similarly disabled. If you have any money to spare, it would be wonderful if you could contribute. Even if you can't contribute money, you could spread the word by sharing this link and help this worthy young woman continue her activism to help others within the disability community.

I was born with a rare genetic physical disability called Larsen syndrome, and I've dedicated my life to advocating for the rights of the disabled.Currently, I work from home, but my goal is to conquer independence so that I can continue to pursue my passion for advocacy. I recently got my driver's…

Emily Ladau '09 was always an excellent student at West Babylon, earning high marks and participating in activities such as West Babylon High School Drama Club productions. Since high school, she has developed a passion for advocating for people with disabilities and has become a prominent advocate. Her writing has been featured on numerous websites, including her own blog "Words I Wheel By." She has even lobbied in Washington, DC for those with disabilities.

Now, she has the chance to win a van designed for people in wheelchairs to drive. Being able to drive would give her great independence, allowing her to work away from home and take her advocacy even further. Please take a few moments to sign up on this website and vote for her.

Everyone has a story to tell. Help us spread the word of National Mobility Awareness Month and the opportunity for Local Heroes to win a Free 2014 wheelchair accessible vehicle.
