This Memorial Day, the West Allis Fire Department honors and remembers the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to reflect on the courage, dedication, and selflessness of those who gave everything to protect the freedoms we hold dear. Their legacy lives on through the strength of our communities and the values they defended.

We also extend our gratitude to all veterans, active-duty military members, and their families for their continued sacrifice and service.

May we never forget those who gave their all.

While many are enjoying the holiday weekend relaxing, the crew of 62A took advantage of the great Memorial Day weather by honoring Lt. Michael P. Murphy’s legacy with the “Murph” workout.

The Murph is more than just a workout — it’s a test of physical and mental toughness, dedication, and perseverance. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes and the importance of pushing ourselves beyond our limits.

Great work by the members of 62A for staying committed to fitness, teamwork, and readiness while remembering the true meaning of Memorial Day.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day weekend, let’s make safety part of the celebration. From grilling and fire pits to outdoor cooking and summer activities, a few simple precautions can help prevent burns and fires before they happen.

🔥 Keep children at least 3 feet away from grills, stoves, campfires, and fire pits.
🔥 Turn pot and pan handles inward while cooking.
🔥 Use long-handled grilling tools and avoid loose clothing near flames.
🔥 Cool burns immediately with cool water and cover with a clean, dry cloth.
🔥 Never leave cooking or open flames unattended.
🔥 Keep fire pits at least 10 feet away from your home, deck, fences, or anything that can burn.

Enjoy the holiday weekend, honor those who served, and help keep your family and neighbors safe. 🇺🇸

On EMS Remembrance Day, the West Allis Fire Department pauses to honor the EMS professionals who have died in the line of duty while serving their communities.

West Allis Fire Department recognizes the EMTs and paramedics whose final call came while answering someone else’s need for help. Their dedication reflected the highest level of service—bringing care, comfort, and stability in moments of crisis, often under the most difficult circumstances.

We remember their courage, their commitment to their patients, and the families and loved ones who continue to carry their memory forward. Their sacrifice is woven into the foundation of the EMS profession and will never be forgotten by those who continue the mission.

We ask our community and EMS partners to join us in a moment of reflection and gratitude for those who gave everything in service to others.

Their watch has ended, but their legacy remains.

On EMS Recognition Day, the West Allis Fire Department proudly recognizes the dedication, professionalism, and service of our EMS members who consistently go above and beyond for the community.

West Allis Fire Department is honored to recognize Lucas Houk as the 2025 Transporter of the Year. Lucas led the department in total transport unit time this past year, reflecting his strong commitment to patient care, reliability, and teamwork in the field.

Lucas Houk also began a new chapter in early 2026, transitioning into the department’s Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) program as a provider. In this role, he continues to serve the community in a different capacity, focusing on proactive patient care, follow-up, and helping reduce future 911 utilization—meaning he will be unable to defend his Transporter of the Year title in 2026.

While his role has changed, his commitment to service has not. We thank Lucas for his continued dedication and for the impact he makes across our EMS system every day.

Today, we also extend our gratitude to all EMS professionals who serve with skill, compassion, and pride in protecting our community.

Thursday of EMS Week is recognized as Save-A-Life Day — a day dedicated to empowering the public with the knowledge and confidence to act during an emergency before first responders arrive.

When a cardiac arrest or life-threatening emergency occurs, the first few minutes are critical. Immediate bystander intervention through hands-only CPR can dramatically increase a person’s chance of survival before EMS crews arrive on scene.

Hands-only CPR is simple: call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives. Quick action from family members, friends, coworkers, or even complete strangers can make the difference between life and death.

At the West Allis Fire Department, we recognize that saving lives is a community effort. EMS professionals may respond quickly, but bystanders are almost always first on scene. Save-A-Life Day serves as an important reminder that anyone has the ability to step in, take action, and help save a life during an emergency.

By increasing awareness and encouraging CPR education throughout the community, we can continue building a safer and more prepared West Allis.

As EMS Week continues, Wednesday recognizes EMS for Children Day — a day dedicated to highlighting the unique challenges and responsibilities involved in caring for our youngest patients.

Children are not simply “small adults.” Pediatric emergencies require specialized training, quick decision-making, and compassionate care tailored to the physical and emotional needs of infants, children, and teenagers. At the West Allis Fire Department, our firefighter/EMTs and paramedics regularly train on pediatric assessment, treatment, and emergency response to ensure we are prepared when children and families need us most.

From medical emergencies and injuries to providing reassurance during stressful situations, our crews strive to deliver calm, compassionate, and professional care to every child we encounter. EMS for Children Day also serves as an important reminder for the community to focus on prevention and preparedness through measures such as proper car seat use, bicycle safety, first aid education, and emergency planning.

Protecting the health and safety of children is a responsibility shared by families, schools, healthcare providers, and emergency responders alike. We are proud to stand alongside our community in helping keep West Allis children safe, healthy, and cared for every day.
