WOW — 57 MPH in a 35 MPH zone, near a crosswalk area. Thankfully, no children were crossing at the time.

Please remember, West Alexandria is a pedestrian and golf cart friendly community. With summer here, kids are out walking, riding bikes, playing, and crossing our streets. PLEASE slow down and stay alert.

Just this evening, a young man was cited for speeding on West Dayton Street near Voge Street. Thankfully, tonight did not have a tragic outcome, but next time could be different. It only takes a split second to change a life.

Our officers will continue enforcing violations such as speeding, distracted driving, and aggressive driving to help keep everyone safe.

This week, Chief Yount joined Lydia Bice on Good Day Dayton for the “Keeping Your Family Safe” segment to discuss distracted driving, especially as warmer weather brings more children and families outside.

Drivers, please put the phone down, keep your eyes on the road, slow down in residential areas, and stay alert. A moment of distraction can change a life forever.

We also encourage parents to talk with their children about bicycle and scooter safety, especially when operating e-bikes or e-scooters. Riders should assume drivers do not see them, slow down, follow traffic laws, and stay alert near vehicles, driveways, intersections, and crosswalks. Most importantly, helmets should be non-negotiable.

This was also a meaningful opportunity to recognize National Police Week, thank officers across the country for their service, honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and recognize the families who quietly support their loved ones in law enforcement.

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK 2026

This week, the West Alexandria Police Department joins communities across the country in recognizing National Police Week.

This is a time to honor the courage, service, and sacrifice of law enforcement officers throughout our nation. It is also a time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and to support the families, friends, and departments who continue to carry their memory.

We are grateful for all law enforcement officers, past and present, who have dedicated themselves to protecting and serving others. The badge represents more than a profession, it represents commitment, responsibility, and the willingness to answer the call when others need help.

To the officers who serve, thank you for your dedication. To the families who stand behind them, thank you for your strength and support. To our community, thank you for continuing to support the West Alexandria Police Department.

WAPD Spotlight: Officer Training

The West Alexandria Police Department continues to place a strong emphasis on improving both the quality and quantity of training for our officers. That commitment includes strengthening internal training while also increasing opportunities for officers to attend advanced outside instruction.

Last year, WAPD officers received training in advanced first aid techniques. Throughout this year, officers will continue building on those skills through scenario-based training focused on sound decision-making under pressure.

This past week, Officer Bernhardt attended training focused on Critical Injury First Aid and Injured Officer Response, including response to high-risk and active-threat situations. This advanced training gives him additional knowledge and skills he can bring back and share with the rest of our team.

Ultimately, training like this helps our officers stay prepared, work together, and make sound decisions during rapidly changing events where seconds matter.

We are proud of Officer Bernhardt’s commitment to professional development and our department’s continued focus on readiness, service, and protecting the West Alexandria community.

This May, WAPD joins communities across the country in recognizing Military Appreciation Month.

We are grateful for the service, sacrifice, and dedication of our nation’s military members, veterans, and their families. We are also proud to recognize the members of our own department who have served, and continue to serve, our country.

As Distracted Driving Awareness Month comes to a close, our message remains the same: your choices behind the wheel matter.

During April, West Alexandria Police Officers issued 14 citations and made 1 arrest (from a traffic stop), but gave over 50 warnings. While not all were related to distracted driving, each one represents an opportunity to improve safety on our roadways.

Every time you drive distracted, you’re putting your passengers, your neighbors, and pedestrians at risk. Enforcement will continue, but safety starts with each driver making the right decision.

Department Equipment Spotlight: New Body-Worn Cameras

Today, our officers are completing the final round of training on new body-worn cameras from Axon Enterprise. These cameras will go into service starting tomorrow.

Because this equipment was paid for IN FULL through grant funding obtained by the Chief, this roughly $9,000 investment came at NO COST to our police budget and is not a burden on our local taxpayers.

Our previous cameras served the department for nearly seven years but had begun to show their age, with some units experiencing breakage, reduced battery life, and occasional malfunctions. This upgrade provides our officers with reliable, modern tools to better serve the community while supporting transparency, accountability, and accurate documentation of interactions.

If you see our officers out in the community, feel free to ask about the cameras. We are always happy to explain how they work and how they support our mission.

We’re proud to continue investing in modern equipment that supports our officers and the community we serve.
