I know we all love our snake friends dearly, but once in awhile, like all loved ones, they can behave in a disappointing manner, like this time Ranger Veronica was doing a Purple Martin count and found he had eaten five babies and killed a female Martin. As of June 4, we still have 20 young and 22 eggs, so that's the good news. Circle of life, right?

Here's a nice surprising story-in-pictures from this morning's Tram Tour (9am to 11am on Sundays, 2pm to 4pm on Thursdays): We saw a male Golden-fronted Woodpecker in a box made for a Screech-Owl! Although it's known to happen, we seldom see it. But then! The female came and transferred food to the male, then left again presumably to gather more bugs for the young! What a nice couple, both taking part in raising the family. In contrast, male Hummingbirds don't participate in nest-building, incubation or feeding offspring, and female Phalaropes also let the male set on the eggs and raise the chicks, while she seeks another mate.
