A Brief History of the Borough of Wenonah

In December 1870, a railroad station, which was much too elegant to transport produce form the local farmers, was about all that stood in the beginning of the town that we now know as Wenonah. There were farms, mainly growing sweet potatoes, but they had been there long before the train station. On December 19, 1870, a special West Jersey Railroad train l

eft Camden for the “New Mantua” train station. The train carried businessmen who were interested in creating a new suburban town, a planned town that would consist of more than 572 acres, currently used as farmland. The Mantua Land and Improvement Company was incorporated on February 21, 1871. The company marked out the town plots into fourteen squares of twelve building lots, each measuring 75 X 150 feet deep. The railroad station, which was situated on the West side of the tracts, was the core of the rectangle, which was one-half mile in length and one-third more in width. Mantua Avenue was one hundred feet wide and all other streets were sixty-six feet wide. On April 3, 1871, it was resolved that the name of the new town would be Wenonah. It is an Indian name meaning first-born daughter. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, “The Song of Hiawatha”, presumes that Wenonah was Hiawatha’s mother. In 1872, the Wenonah House was opened for guests. The forty-room hotel boasted of having running water and gas in every room. The hotel was furnished elegantly to attract the rich Philadelphians for the hot summers. Advertisements noted that Wenonah is a favorite place for all those seeking country fresh air. Another brochure advertised, “There is no healthier location in the vicinity of Philadelphia.” The Mantua Land and Development Company sales brochures indicated, “the ground was high with good drainage and free of Malaria.” The same brochure indicated that the town was “only twelve miles from Philadelphia and that Wanamaker’s delivered!”

Important Message Regarding Trash Collection:

Until further notice, residents must have all trash containers placed out for collection no later than 6AM on collection days (Fridays).

The Wheelabrator/WIN facility where our trash is normally disposed of is currently shut down, and in the interim our trash will be disposed of at the county landfill. To ensure that the trash can be deposited at the landfill on schedule, Logan Township will be collecting our trash early in the day. Logan Township will not be able to make a return trip to collect any missed carts, so it is imperative that all cans be placed out no later than 6AM to ensure they are not missed. If possible, we encourage you to put out carts the night prior. Recycling will be collected following trash pickup. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

The weather forecast for Memorial Day calls for heavier rain in the morning than we anticipated so we're forced to cancel Wenonah's parade and cemetery service. In lieu of these ceremonies, please take a moment to honor and pay tribute to those who lost their lives in military service to our nation. We don't know them all but we owe them all.

Memorial Day Parade on May 25th

Please be sure to join us on Monday, May 25th at 8:45 am for Wenonah’s annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony Service hosted by American Legion Post 192. All are welcome for a procession along Mantua Avenue to the Wenonah Cemetery for a short graveside service in observance of Memorial Day. Walkers and bike riders encouraged. The parade will start at the corner of Mantua and Marion promptly at 8:45am, and will make a brief stop at Veteran’s Corner in Wenonah Park before processing to the Wenonah Cemetery. Join your friends, neighbors, Scouts, the Clearview High School Marching Band, Wenonah and Mantua military veterans, and our local fire companies to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country. Following the service in Wenonah Cemetery, all are welcome to continue on in procession to the Mantua Cemetery for additional ceremonies there.

Please be aware of these other ways you can honor those who died in service of our country this Memorial Day:

Place flags or flowers on graves of military veterans
Fly the US flag at half-staff until noon
Visit monuments dedicated to veterans
Donate to charities to aid Gold Star families

FIREWORKS REMINDER
We are looking forward to celebrating as a community for Memorial Day weekend – we love commemorating the start of summer and gathering for the parade. But we ask our residents to remember that setting off fireworks on public property is illegal. Many of us are aware of careless actions by unknown persons using fireworks at Langston Field that caused a fire to the snack bar. Let’s not let this happen again. Please act responsibly and say no to fireworks on Borough Property!

The borough office will be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day.
