U.S. Forest Service - Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest

U.S. Forest Service - Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest Over 3.8-million acres of public lands along the east slope of the Cascades. The forest lies east of the Cascade Crest, which defines its western boundary.

The Forest Service manages a system of 155 national forests, 20 national grasslands, and 222 research and experimental forests, as well as other special areas, covering more than 192 million acres of public land. The Forest Service has evolved into a 30,000 employee agency that manages the national forests for a number of multiple uses, including recreation, timber, wilderness, minerals, water, gr

azing, fish, and wildlife. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest encompasses more than 4-million acres in Washington state and stretches north to south from the Canadian border to the Goat Rocks Wilderness - a distance of about 180 miles. The eastern edge of the forest extends into the Okanogan highlands, then south along the Okanogan and Columbia Rivers, and then to the Yakima River valley. Because of this wide geographic range, the forest is very diverse - from the high, glaciated alpine peaks along the Cascade Crest and the numerous mountain ranges extending eastward from the crest, through deep, lush valleys of old growth forest, to the dry and rugged shrub-steppe country at its eastern edge. Elevations range from below 1,000 ft. to over 9,000 ft. Precipitation varies widely - from more than 70-inches along the crest to less than 10-inches at its eastern edge. This of course greatly affects the forest and vegetation types across the area. Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest resources provide significant public benefits in water, forage, wildlife, habitat, wood, recreation, and minerals. While these resources are managed under the multiple use concept to provide the public with a wide variety of benefits, an important emphasis of that management is to maintain and enhance sustainable ecosystems for future generations. Stronger access restrictions are now in place for the Three Queens Fire area on the Cle Elum Ranger District. With a major increase in heavy equipment working along Hwy 903 and FSR 49, no new access waivers will be issued at this time. Only previously approved permit holders may enter closed areas.

“Limiting access right now is essential for public and firefighter safety,” said Agency Administrator Joshua Voorhis. “Heavy equipment is moving fast across narrow roads, and these temporary restrictions help crews finish critical work more quickly.”

Waivers will be reassessed Sept. 16–17.

For questions about the access waiver permit process, please contact the Cle Elum Ranger District office weekdays, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at 509-852-1100. The form can be found online here: https://shorturl.at/p43KJ

Sharing for awareness for those recreationists looking to get out into the eastern portion Pasayten Wilderness area in the vicinity of the Sinlahekin Fire.

Today, Friday September 11th, the Sinlahekin Fire closure will be reduced. Part of this change will allow some access to the Pasayten Wilderness for the High Buck hunt which starts September 15 and runs through the 25th. This reduction in closed area will allow recreators to travel from Loomis Washington along the Forest Service 3900 (Toats Coulee) road and access the Middle Fork, Windy Peak and Chewuch trailheads. Opening these parts of the Colville National Forest is a cooperative effort that includes the Sinlahekin fire team, Washington State Department of Natural Resources, and the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The Colville National Forest is working hard to respond to the public need and taking advantage of opportunities where the suppression activities will allow safe access for the public. Heavy equipment movement and fire management activity is still happening in the area, and the public is advised to exercise caution when traveling in the area.

Further information (and a bigger map) regarding this change in the closure area can be found on the Colville National Forest website at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/colville/alerts/sinlahekin-fire-closure-areas-tonasket-ranger-district

As the 2026 fire season continues and the hunting season ramps up, active fire suppression efforts are ongoing across public lands to protect communities, wildlife habitat, and natural resources. The USDA Forest Service and other federal, state and county agencies continue working full‑time to control and extinguish fires quickly and safely.

Public and Firefighter Safety is Number One:

Fire Closure orders, Public Use Restrictions remain in effect on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. And County Evacuation Alerts remain in effect in both Chelan, Okganogan and Kittitas Counties.

Firefighters and fire support personnel continue active fire suppression, fuel and debris removal and fire line clean up and repair. There is a lot of heavy equipment, low boys and fire engines, and crew vehicles driving on narrow forest roads throughout the closure area.

Despite recent scattered rain, many areas remain dry with abundant fuel, and human activity outdoors can increase fire risk.

As of today, Friday September 4th, the updated Little Giant Fire Closure Order 06-17-07-2026-40 restores public access to some areas of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, as containment of the Little Giant Fire has increased, providing more areas for hunting and other recreational opportunities.

Have you ever stayed in a fire lookout? The Steliko Lookout, managed as a rental, has now been removed from the closure order. This and other areas in the lower Entiat drainage, including areas of Roaring Creek, Swakane Canyon and Navarre Coulee are also no longer in the closure area.

If you are hoping to head to the Chumstick area, including Derby Canyon and Ollala Canyon, some trails and roads in this area are also now open. And the Little Giant Fire/North of Lake Chelan Closure Order 06-17-02-2026-29 has been fully lifted as well.

Evacuation levels have recently been reduced by Chelan County for the Little Giant Fire, but this does not mean all public lands within these areas are now open. Active firefighting operations including heavy equipment, hazard tree removal and after fire repair and restoration activities are ongoing. Also be on the lookout for debris flows happening during rainstorms.

Have a safe, wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

While you take time to enjoy your National Forests this Labor Day Holiday, please remember that there are still active fire operations going on across the Pacific Northwest, including the Sinlahekin Fire.

Areas of the forest and roads that run through them continue to be closed for many reasons due to wildfire activity. Heavy equipment often moves during low light or after dark, standing dead trees can pose a direct threat to falling and hitting cars or people, and the fire itself can pose serious threats to safe movement.

Hunting season is right around the corner, but please do not become a casualty prior to opening day. Hiking, scouting, and travel through closed areas is prohibited. The full closure order and map can be found on the Colville National Forest website https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/colville/alerts/sinlahekin-fire-closure-areas-tonasket-ranger-district
