So this Saturday the 4th we are celebrating my brother's retirement - a little late since he went out the 1st of the year - so I wanted to say a few things about Scott and his literal decades of service. All of our family was involved and worked in the business since an early age, but in 1986 things really changed for us when we bought the business from our folks and every since then till the beginning of this year we ran the business together. I did field work primarily and Scott kept the financial end of it, and all I can say is that he was gifted in that area to say the least. I have used many words to describe his abilities to include genious, financial ninja, wizard, exceptional, expert, etc., etc. He was one of the most detailed people I have ever known and seen us through many years of business, some of them, especially in the early days, where things were pretty tight. He has a great memory and remembers details that blow through my mind like a gust of wind. He overseen and managed the employee retirement program and was wise and fruitful in his investment stategies. In our industry Scott was an expert in many areas including the billing side of things. So good that at one point him and another provider literally wrote the ambulance billing guide for the State of Washington. Of all of Scott's qualities, which were many, the most important was his heart of service. Scott first and foremost was a man that like helping people and that showed up in his dealing with customers, other businesses and in his community. He spent extra time with all he encountered no matter the subject and spent an untold amount of time and effort on community projects and events like the Japanese garden, arbor day, Take Pride in America, the Apple Blossom run, and many other ones I won't mention. Lastly I will say this, many partnerships don't work out, but that was not the case with Scott and I. We shared a similar vision for what we were doing and where we were going. I honestly can't remember any major disagreement we had in all of those years working together and all I can say is that it was a fun ride together and praying for and hoping you will have a long and health retirment. Love you bro!

Do you enjoy a fast-paced, quick on your feet, problem-solving job? If so, then working as a Dispatcher for Ballard Ambulance might be the right job for you! In a world full of negative news, we all like a feel good story, right?! Well here’s one of mine that happened recently. It’s not some incredible life-saving story, but it sure had a lasting impact on me personally.

I married my wife (Maryann) on June 2, 1990. We both loved cheesecake so we had “Cakes by Jan” make us a cheesecake wedding cake - with strawberry and blueberry toppings!

Cakes by Jan was another local small business at the time - owned by Jan & Bob Starcevich. From what I recall, Jan made all the cakes and Bob delivered them.

Our cake was incredibly delicious - so delicious that there wasn’t even one piece left at the end of the night! And it was SO good that when we went to retrieve the top tier of our cake from the venue’s refrigerator, we discovered that someone had stolen it (because it really was that delicious)!

We were obviously disappointed and thought to ourselves, I guess we won’t be eating the top of the cake on our one year anniversary! But who really likes to eat cake that’s been frozen for a year, right?!

On our one year wedding anniversary, I was at work when I saw Bob driving into our parking lot in their delivery van. I thought to myself, I wonder who the lucky person is that’s getting one of Jan’s cakes?!

I was totally shocked when Bob walked into MY office with a huge cheesecake - along with strawberry and blueberry toppings! Bob told me that Jan had heard about the top-tier of our cake being stolen, so they decided to make us a fresh, delicious cheesecake to enjoy on our first anniversary.

Needless to say, it made our one year anniversary even more special by this not so random act of kindness! (and it was a lot better than a one year old piece of frozen cake!)

A few weeks ago, I happened to see Jan in our office. I started to recount the story with the other people in the room. As I was telling the story, I got to the part about the cake being stolen.

It was at this point that Jan interrupted me and said, “Oh I wish I would have known about this - because I would have made you a new one!”

I told her, “let me finish the story”! She had obviously forgotten, so I continued and told my employees how Jan had heard about the cake, and how she made us a fresh one and had Bob deliver it to us on our one year anniversary.

We shared a good laugh about our failing memory, but that was a memory I wasn’t going to forget!

As I stated earlier, this isn’t one of those miraculous life-saving stories that we sometimes see in EMS. But it was something that I will always remember.

We are so grateful for people - and other local small businesses like Jan and Bob and “Cakes by Jan”. Although no longer in business, Jan and Bob worked hard, always went above and beyond, and had an impact on our local community and I will always appreciate and cherish that.

Thank you Jan!
