In a world full of negative news, we all like a feel good story, right?! Well here’s one of mine that happened recently. It’s not some incredible life-saving story, but it sure had a lasting impact on me personally.
I married my wife (Maryann) on June 2, 1990. We both loved cheesecake so we had “Cakes by Jan” make us a cheesecake wedding cake - with strawberry and blueberry toppings!
Cakes by Jan was another local small business at the time - owned by Jan & Bob Starcevich. From what I recall, Jan made all the cakes and Bob delivered them.
Our cake was incredibly delicious - so delicious that there wasn’t even one piece left at the end of the night! And it was SO good that when we went to retrieve the top tier of our cake from the venue’s refrigerator, we discovered that someone had stolen it (because it really was that delicious)!
We were obviously disappointed and thought to ourselves, I guess we won’t be eating the top of the cake on our one year anniversary! But who really likes to eat cake that’s been frozen for a year, right?!
On our one year wedding anniversary, I was at work when I saw Bob driving into our parking lot in their delivery van. I thought to myself, I wonder who the lucky person is that’s getting one of Jan’s cakes?!
I was totally shocked when Bob walked into MY office with a huge cheesecake - along with strawberry and blueberry toppings! Bob told me that Jan had heard about the top-tier of our cake being stolen, so they decided to make us a fresh, delicious cheesecake to enjoy on our first anniversary.
Needless to say, it made our one year anniversary even more special by this not so random act of kindness! (and it was a lot better than a one year old piece of frozen cake!)
A few weeks ago, I happened to see Jan in our office. I started to recount the story with the other people in the room. As I was telling the story, I got to the part about the cake being stolen.
It was at this point that Jan interrupted me and said, “Oh I wish I would have known about this - because I would have made you a new one!”
I told her, “let me finish the story”! She had obviously forgotten, so I continued and told my employees how Jan had heard about the cake, and how she made us a fresh one and had Bob deliver it to us on our one year anniversary.
We shared a good laugh about our failing memory, but that was a memory I wasn’t going to forget!
As I stated earlier, this isn’t one of those miraculous life-saving stories that we sometimes see in EMS. But it was something that I will always remember.
We are so grateful for people - and other local small businesses like Jan and Bob and “Cakes by Jan”. Although no longer in business, Jan and Bob worked hard, always went above and beyond, and had an impact on our local community and I will always appreciate and cherish that.
Thank you Jan!
