πŸ”₯ HIGH FIRE DANGER ACROSS NORTHERN MICHIGAN πŸ”₯

Before you burn, check first!

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources continues to restrict open debris burning across much of northern Michigan as dry conditions and elevated fire danger persist.

The National Weather Service in Ga***rd reports that low humidity, drying vegetation, and gusty winds continue to create conditions that support the rapid start and spread of wildfires.

🟫 Brown Counties:
No burn permits are currently being issued.

⬜ Gray Counties:
Burn permits are not issued electronically. Contact the DNR for permit information.

Before conducting any outdoor burning:

βœ… Check current burn permit conditions before burning
βœ… Keep a hose, water source, or firefighting tools nearby
βœ… Never leave a fire unattended
βœ… Fully extinguish campfires before leaving
βœ… Avoid activities that may create sparks in dry vegetation
βœ… Use extra caution with trailers, equipment, and vehicles around dry grass

πŸ•οΈ Small recreational campfires contained within a fire ring or fire pit are generally not affected by debris burning permit restrictions. Campfires should always be attended and completely extinguished when finished.

⚠️ Remember: Anyone conducting outdoor burning may be held financially responsible for fire suppression costs, property damage, and other losses resulting from an escaped fire.

πŸ”₯ BEFORE YOU BURN, CHECK FIRST πŸ”₯

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources continues to restrict open debris burning across much of northern Michigan due to elevated wildfire danger.

The National Weather Service in Ga***rd has also issued a Special Weather Statement for northern Lower Michigan, citing:

⚠️ Drying vegetation and fuels
⚠️ Relative humidity values as low as 20-30%, with some areas dropping into the teens
⚠️ East winds of 5-10 mph with gusts up to 15-20 mph

These conditions can allow fires to start easily and spread quickly.

🟫 Brown Counties: No burn permits are being issued.
⬜ Gray Counties: Burn permits are not issued electronically.

Before conducting any outdoor burning:

βœ… Check current burn permit conditions
βœ… Keep a hose, water source, or firefighting tools nearby
βœ… Never leave a fire unattended
βœ… Ensure campfires are fully extinguished before leaving
βœ… Avoid dragging trailer chains or parking hot equipment on dry grass
βœ… Use extra caution with any activity that could create sparks

πŸ•οΈ Burn permit restrictions generally do not apply to small recreational campfires contained within a fire pit. However, campfires should always be attended and completely extinguished when finished.

πŸ”₯ BEFORE YOU BURN, CHECK FIRST πŸ”₯

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is urging residents and visitors to use extreme caution as wildfire danger continues to increase across northern Michigan.

Current fire danger ratings are reported as HIGH to VERY HIGH across much of the northern Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula due to warm temperatures, dry vegetation, and a lack of significant rainfall in the forecast.

🚫 The DNR is currently not issuing permits for burning yard debris in the northern Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula.

According to DNR Fire Prevention Specialist Paul Rogers:

"We do not expect significant rainfall over the next 10 days, and that greatly increases the risk for wildfires. Low moisture levels in conifer needles and dry pine fuels mean fires can start easily and spread quickly under the right conditions."

Before conducting any outdoor burning:

βœ… Check the Michigan DNR Burn Permit Map
βœ… Keep a hose, water source, or firefighting tools nearby
βœ… Never leave fires or hot coals unattended
βœ… Keep campfires contained in a fire ring or fire pit
βœ… Completely extinguish campfires before leaving by dousing, stirring, and dousing again
βœ… Ensure trailer chains are not dragging on roadways
βœ… Avoid parking hot vehicles or equipment on dry grass
βœ… Never shoot fireworks into dry grass, brush, or wooded areas

πŸ•οΈ Burn permit restrictions generally do not apply to small recreational campfires contained within a fire pit. However, campfires should always be attended and fully extinguished when finished.

⚠️ Anyone conducting outdoor burning may be held financially responsible for fire suppression costs, property damage, and other losses resulting from an escaped fire.
