Fayette County Burn Ban Reinstated

The Fayette County Commissioners Court held an emergency meeting this morning to re-instate the burn ban.

The ban expired on March 8, and the Court met last Friday to consider putting it back in place. They ultimately decided to keep the ban lifted, but the vote was 4-1 with Pct. 3 Commissioner Harvey Berckenhoff voting against it. Berckenhoff said several of his constituents thought it was still too dry and windy, and they wanted the Court to put the burn ban back in place.

At this morningโ€™s meeting, Fayette County Emergency Management Coordinator Angela Hahn said local fire departments responded to five fires that had gotten out of control on Friday and another four to five over the weekend.

Early this morning, a tree fell on a power line in the Warda area and sparked a 40-acre wildfire. That fire is still burning. However, County Judge Dan Mueller noted at this morningโ€™s meeting that the Courtโ€™s decision on Friday would not have affected the situation in Warda.

The Weimar Police Department would like to inform the community about our upcoming Shattered Dreams program taking place on Thursday, March 5th, at 8:30 a.m. in the Weimar High School Visitor's parking lot.

We invite the public to observe this impactful program, which is designed to educate students on the real-life consequences of impaired and distracted driving. The event will include a staged vehicle crash, with student participants portraying injuries and being transported by EMS and PHI Med Flight as part of the demonstration.

*Please note that there will be a heavy law enforcement and EMS presence before and during the program. EMS and DPS units will be staged in the parking lot of Weimar United Church before the event. There is no cause for alarmโ€”all activity is planned and part of the program.

The program will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. Parking will be available in front of the tennis courts and along Highway 90.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with WPD at 979-725-8060.

The Weimar VFD was paged to the 200 block of North Eagle street for a structure fire at 1:22 pm today. Upon arrival, the first arriving officer found the single story wood frame structure fully engulfed in flames. The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department was called upon for an additional pumper and manpower. Firefighters worked frantically to bring the blaze under control. Strong north winds and heavy smoke made it difficult to attack but firefighters managed to bring it in check. Everyone that was inside the structure at the time the fire broke out managed to escape with one minor injury due to a fall. The structure was a total loss. Big thanks to the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department for responding with extra manpower, Colorado County EMS, Weimar PD, Colorado County Sheriffs office, DPS, City of Weimar utilities.
