🌳 Enjoying a moment of calm in Webster, NY!

As New York Invasive Species Awareness Week comes to a close, let’s take a moment to appreciate the incredible work that Webster Parks and Recreation, Webster NY and Friends of Webster Trails do to protect our natural landscapes. Residents and visitors across our region utilize our parks every day, regardless of the season, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Protecting our parkland and its inhabitants remains a top priority for our Town.

The fight against non-native invasive species continues throughout New York State and Monroe County. We invite you to join the effort to protect these natural spaces by planting native species, cleaning your equipment and vehicles between trips, and following safe practices to prevent the spread of harmful species. We hope residents continue to enjoy the beautiful settings that our employees and volunteers take pride in maintaining. Visit www.websterny.gov/232/Parks-Trails to explore a variety of parks, preserves, and trails.

We look forward to seeing you out there!

Please be on alert!

In late spring and early summer, turtles cross the street to migrate to their nesting sites. Thousands of turtles are unnecessarily struck and killed by vehicles each year in New York State. Please do not swerve suddenly or leave your traffic lane, but take care to avoid hitting turtles. If you see a turtle in the road or on the shoulder and can safely stop your vehicle, please consider moving it to the shoulder or the side of the road. We have some reminders from Webster Animal Control to keep in mind as turtle nesting season continues:

🐢 Move them in the same direction they were traveling: Turtles are purposeful and may try to cross again if turned around.

🐢 Small turtles: Approach slowly, let them retract into their shell if startled. Then gently pick up near the sides of the shell and carry.

🐢 Snapping turtles: Never lift by the tail (can injure their spine). Use a car mat, shovel, or sturdy board; hold at the back of the shell, not the sides. Snapping turtles have long necks and a strong bite.

🐢 Injured turtles: Look for shell cracks, blood on the shell or plastron, or blood on the road. If injured, contact a wildlife rehabilitator.

🐢 Leave them be after you move them: Do not take a turtle home with you. All turtles native to New York are protected by law and cannot be collected without a permit.

Visit our Animal Control website for more seasonal wildlife reminders: https://websterny.gov/692/Wildlife. If you have any concerns related to population or disease management of native wildlife, contact the New York State DEC - Wildlife Region 8.

As New York Invasive Species Awareness Week continues, Webster Parks and Recreation, Webster NY, in collaboration with the Conservation Board, has posted “Un-wanted” posters at kiosks in Town parks. The goal of these posters is to educate visitors about the threats we face from species that did not evolve to interact with our environment. Non-native invasive species outcompete, kill, or entirely wipe out native aquatic and terrestrial species as a result.

These “Un-Wanted” posters feature five key invasive species that have or will negatively affect public health, the economy, and the well-being of our native ecosystem in Webster. Knowing some of these species and the harm that they inflict is important. The invasive species include:

⚠ Eurasian Watermilfoil: Threatens waterways and native aquatic species.
⚠ Bamboo: Threatens Webster properties and structures.
⚠ Spotted Lanternfly: Has not been confirmed in Webster yet but threatens agriculture and our regional economy.
⚠ Garlic Mustard: Threatens woodland health and biodiversity.
⚠ Giant Hogweed (DO NOT TOUCH): Threatens human health and our economy.

Methods you can use to combat the spread of invasive species include:

✅ Avoid planting non-native plants; instead, plant native species of plants, trees, and shrubs.
✅ Clean your equipment and vehicles between trips.
✅ Wash off watercraft after removal from any body of water.
✅ Wipe off your shoes and boots before entering a park or trail.

Be on the lookout for our posters the next time you visit our parks to learn more and help spread the word!

Today is the start of New York Invasive Species Awareness Week!

From June 8–14, we recognize the threats posed by non-native invasive species to public health, the economy, and the well-being of our native ecosystem. You can see their effects in your backyards, gardens, and your favorite parks and waterways. Some species are introduced accidentally, such as on the bottom of your shoe or in firewood, while others are purchased as pets or planted as new additions to your garden. The Webster Conservation Board urges residents to consider using native plant species in your yards and to follow important techniques to prevent the spread of invasive species.

Wondering how you can get involved in the fight against invasive species? Friends of Webster Trails (FWT) is our community partner working on the front lines! They assist Webster Parks and Recreation, Webster NY in maintaining trails and parks across Webster. FWT provides a regionally vital service through its Habitat Preservation Committee, which includes caring for grassland habitats to improve meadow health and benefit native birds, butterflies, and plant life. They dedicate time each week to removing non-native invasive plant species and replacing them with a variety of native species.

The Habitat Preservation Committee works every Friday at 9:00am from April to November to care for the natural spaces in Webster we enjoy most. Email [email protected] to stay up to date on weekly meeting locations and visit their website at webstertrails.org/habitat-preservation-committee/ to learn more. Consider joining them on Wednesday, June 17 at 7:00pm to participate in a seedling planting event. The location will be announced soon.
