Webster Groves City Council will discuss the future roadway and multi-use path alignment for South Elm Avenue at the next meeting on June 16.

The construction project is planned for 2027 from Glendale to Watson Road. A $2 million federal grant will support the complete resurfacing of the street via mill and overlay with the addition of a shared-use path on the west side of Elm Avenue.

Intended for pedestrians and cyclists, the shared-use path will bring improved connectivity and enhanced safety for a heavily traveled corridor in South Webster.

The City recently conducted an online survey to collect additional public input on the placement of the multi-use trail. Of the 161 responses, approximately 63% preferred removing west side parking and constructing the shared-use path within the existing roadway footprint, as opposed to adjacent right-of-way. Support for this option was consistent across all respondent groups, including those who live on South Elm.

A vote on the multi-use configuration is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16. Public comments will be accepted at the beginning of the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

A water main replacement project is planned for the Webster Woods subdivision.

Weather permitting, a contractor for Missouri American Water will begin work on Monday, June 29.

The project area is immediately south of Interstate 44 and east of Berry Road, including portions of Webster Woods Drive along with sections of Grove Avenue, Armin Lane, and Iris Place.

A contractor will replace approximately 3,150 feet of pipe for improved reliability. Residents with underground fencing and lawn irrigation should mark these lines to reduce the likelihood of damage during construction.

The project duration is estimated at 6-8 months with weekday work hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There are two instances where homeowners may experience a disruption in water service.

1. When the water service line is disconnected from the old main to the new pipe.
2. When the new pipe is connected to the existing water system.

Advance notice will be provided of anticipated service disruptions. Final cleanup and site restoration will begin within a few weeks after the new main and services are installed.

For questions, contact Dave Corwin with Missouri American Water at 314-370-3876 or [email protected].

The Webster Groves Fire Department focuses heavily on community risk reduction through interactive training and educational events.

Battalion Chief Tom Viviano demonstrates how to use a portable fire extinguisher with support from Firefighter/Paramedic Caitlin Conrad and Brandon Swenson.

Just remember the standard acronym - P.A.S.S.

P – Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher to break the tamper seal.
A - Aim the nozzle or hose low, pointing directly at the base of the fire.
S - Squeeze the handle slowly and evenly to discharge the extinguishing agent.
S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side across the base of the flames until the fire is out.

Always keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen of your home. It’s also a good idea to have one for the garage and the basement if you have a workshop.

Have you visited the Gerry Welch Sculpture Garden?

In the heart of Webster Groves at the intersection of West Kirkham and North Gore, the sculpture garden is a tribute to creativity, community, and the arts.

The centerpiece is a public art installation called “Inflorescence.” Designed by Catharine Magel, this whimsical combination of a bird and a flower inspires us to appreciate the beauty of Earth and feel the connectedness of nature.

The sculpture garden contains other notable works from Ernest Trova, an internationally famous pop art painter and sculptor from St. Louis. He is best known for his signature “Falling Man” series and helped establish the Laumeier Sculpture Park.

Seven mid-county municipalities will participate in the study of a regional fire authority in partnership with the local firefighters’ union, IAFF Local 2665.

Initiated by the City of Clayton, the study will assess the estimated cost of operating a centralized entity, while maintaining or enhancing service levels.

The study will evaluate streamlining administrative functions, equipment, training, purchasing, and service delivery along with potential benefits for firefighter recruitment and retention.

In addition to Clayton and Webster Groves, the other cities participating include Maplewood, Shrewsbury, Richmond Heights, University City, and Olivette.

By joining the study, the City of Webster Groves is not obligated to become a member of any potential future fire authority.

This intergovernmental agreement is merely to determine if it would be feasible, prudent, and/or desired.

The City of Webster Groves would like to share the results of an online survey about the South Elm roadway resurfacing project and shared-use path.

This project is planned for the 2027 construction season between Glendale and Watson Road. Residents were asked about the placement of the multi-use trail in relation to the roadway.

The survey was conducted from Friday, May 15 to Wednesday, May 27 with publication via the city’s website, social media platforms, and external newsletter.

The City received 161 responses with participation from 21 residents who live directly off South Elm and 92 residents who live in the immediate area in South Webster.

Approximately 63% preferred removing west side parking and constructing the shared-use path within the existing roadway footprint, as opposed to adjacent right-of-way.

Support for this option was consistent across all respondent groups, including those who live on South Elm.

Residents also had an opportunity to submit open-ended comments with the survey. Generally, these comments focused on minimizing impacts to private property along with desired safety improvements and traffic concerns.

The survey comments are linked in the "What's Up Webster" newsletter for Friday, June 5.
