Earlier this week we hosted our bi-monthly Coffee & Camaraderie where we had Angela Ehlert from Hamilton County Public Health and Tim Zahn from Hamilton County, Iowa Emergency Management share information and suggestions about preparing for disasters.

A disaster could be something as personal as a trip to the emergency room to as catastrophic as a tornado. If you dedicate time to thinking about what you would need or do, that's the first step in preparing. As you start seriously thinking about what it would be like in the hours following a tornado you start realizing the importance of grabbing that bag of medication on your way to the basement or bathtub. Or making sure your cell phone is charged and close by when the weather turns ugly.

If you are heading to the emergency room, you should take your medication with you. Having a list of your medication along with all of your emergency contact information would be beneficial for either disaster.

If you are packing for a trip, be sure and pack some extra medication in case your flights are delayed or your traveling partner becomes ill and your stay is extended. And I'm sure there is room in that suitcase to take that medication list with all of your emergency contacts along.

Please join us Wednesday, March 25th, 8:30 am in the lower level of the Hamilton County Courthouse for Coffee & Camaraderie hosted by the Hamilton County Veterans Affairs.

We'll have personnel from Hamilton County, Iowa Emergency Management and Hamilton County Public Health along with a couple of physical therapists from the Fort Dodge VA Clinic.

We handed out this single page guide at the VA Coffee yesterday. It might look a bit ... busy... but take a minute and really review it.

The chart breaks down medical conditions you may experience - labels it red for emergency, yellow for urgent but not really an emergency, and green for routine.

Then it provides phone numbers, websites or other direction as to what you should do. It's a great resource to print and put on your frig!

This month's program includes information about Walkasins.

Walkasins is a sensory prosthesis designed for patients with peripheral neuropathy who struggle with gait and balance.
