Weaverville Fire Department

Weaverville Fire Department This is the official page of the Weaverville Volunteer Fire Department and Weaverville Fire District. Located in California.

The town of Weaverville was established in 1850. In the succeeding years, there were some devastating fires that destroyed most of the town. In April 1898 the County Supervisors appointed a three-member board to act as Fire Commissioners, and on April 12, 1898 the Fire District was established. The District enacted Ordinance #1 which put into effect controls regarding stoves, stove pipes, furnaces

, and many other issues that pertained to fire safety. There was still no active talk of organized firefighting or of an official department. Equipment still consisted of the old firefighting bucket brigade. In September of 1905 another devastating fire served as a reminder that more needed to be done and in March of 1906, the Commission purchased a hand pumper engine, three hose carts, five hydrants, and some other equipment. Later that year a 40 member Volunteer Department was established and a Fire Chief, Foreman, Secretary, and Treasurer were elected. Thus, Weaverville Fire Protection District and Weaverville Volunteer Fire Department became two entities working together, as one, to provide the community of Weaverville with a fire service. Today the District, among other things, acts as the regulating agency and employs a full-time Fire Chief/Marshal to enforce such regulations. The Volunteer Fire Department is a registered 501c3 corporation and is responsible for the day to day business of responding to emergency calls.

We want to take a moment to thank Community Foundation of the North State and the Redding Rancheria Fund for granting us $3,500. The funds were used to purchase medical supplies including EMT ‘optional scope’ supplies and new bags to organize the supplies. It is because of generous donations such as this we can continue to provide a high level of service to this community we live in and love.

May 2026 Stats and Review:

We ran a total of 58 calls-for-service in May making our year-to-date call total 263. Of the 58 calls we responded to, 7 were fire related, 33 medical-aids, 1 vehicle accident, 10 other public assists, and 7 false alarms.

Volunteers completed nearly 100 person-hours of training. We trained on structure defense, ventilation, hoses, communication, and medical.
Volunteers completed an additional 93 person-hours of Fundraising and Events including a Staff Ride to the Andy Plamer memorial, our annual Mother’s Day Rose Fundraiser, and a booth at the HRN Children's Festival.

We would also like to take a moment to recognize and congratulate Firefighter/EMT Laurel Brown on graduating Shasta College with two AS degrees in Business Administration and Management.

On this National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend WFD members, along with USFS firefighters, participated in a Staff Ride to the Andy Palmer memorial. A Staff Ride is a hands-on, learning method that uses a real incident site to teach leaders how to think, plan, and act in a complex fire situation. The goal is to improve future performance and safety. The memorial, located off Dutch Creek Road, takes a half hour to hike to. As members hiked the incident was discussed.

Andy Palmer, 18, a new seasonal firefighter, was with a crew that was assigned to cut a large ponderosa pine downslope. The tree struck a nearby sugar pine, which then fell upslope, hitting Palmer, causing multiple severe injuries, and his untimely death. There have only been a handful of incidents that have fundamentally changed the world of wildland fire management for the better. The Dutch Creek incident is one of them. Review of this incident gave us “incident within an incident” (IWI) plans and changed how command teams communicate medical emergencies.

Today, our flag flies at half-staff, and we light the night red to honor Andy and all firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. Let us always learn from past events to help prevent future loss.
