The Facts:
According to the U.S.

Westcentral Oklahoma Literacy Coalition seeks to recruit and tutor English-speaking and non English-speaking adults needing improvement in speaking, reading, and writing skills. Department of Education, one of five adult Americans is functionally illiterate. In Oklahoma, that statistic translates to over 450000 adults who lack of the basic skills necessary to:
*Read traffic sign
*Read a prescript

ion drug label
*Make out a grocery list
*Follow a recipe
*Read a want ad
*Fill out an application form

The Cost:
The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that 15% of the nation's workforce is illiterate, costing the country $225 billion each year in lost productivity, remedial basic skills training, unrealized tax revenue, etc. On average, an illiterate adult earns 42% less than a high school graduate. Oklahoma's Department of Corrections reports that 20% of those in the estate's prisons read below the sixth grade level. The Illiterate:
Illiterate people are present in all groups. In fact, the National Education Association reports that the breakdown of the illiterate in English is as follow:
*41%- English-speaking whites
*22%- English-speaking blacks
*22%- Spanish speaking
*15%- other non-English speakers
