Research shows that domestic violence calls often increase during periods of heightened stress.

Times of financial pressure, social isolation, or major life changes can place strain on relationships. While stress can explain tension, it never excuses violence or abuse.

Some common factors that can increase risk include:

• financial stress
• social isolation
• reduced access to support systems
• increased substance use

Domestic violence does not follow stereotypes.

Abuse can occur in:

• marriages
• dating relationships
• same-sex partnerships
• non-married couples
• long-term or short-term relationships

And it does not stop at any boundary. Domestic violence affects people of every age, gender, sexual orientation, race, and financial background.

Men can be victims.
Women can be victims.
LGBTQ individuals can be victims.

At its core, domestic violence is about power and control, not gender roles or relationship labels.

Healthy communities recognize this reality and work to create safe spaces where survivors can seek help without fear, shame, or judgment.

🌸 The first day of spring is here!

Spring brings longer days, warmer weather, and time outdoors—but it also brings rapid weather changes and new seasonal safety risks, especially here in Texas.

Spring is the peak season for:

• severe thunderstorms
• tornadoes
• damaging winds
• large hail
• flash flooding

A few simple steps can help keep your family safe as the seasons change.

🌤️ Spring Safety Tips

✔ Review your family emergency plan for severe storms
✔ Prepare a basic emergency kit with water, food, flashlight, batteries, and a weather radio
✔ Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
✔ Check your vehicle tires, brakes, and wipers for spring driving conditions
✔ Stay weather aware during storm watches and warnings
✔ Use SPF 30+ sunscreen, even on cloudy days
✔ Stay hydrated as temperatures start to rise

Spring is a beautiful season—but preparation helps keep it a safe one.

When emergencies happen in our community, REACT volunteers are there to support people through difficult moments while first responders focus on the scene.

Let’s work together to keep Parker County safe.

People who struggle with self-harm are not broken.

Often, self-harm is a coping behavior used by someone who is trying to manage emotional pain that feels overwhelming or difficult to express.

Many people who struggle with self-harm are dealing with:

• anxiety
• depression
• trauma
• intense emotional stress
• feelings of isolation or numbness

Recovery is possible. Healing often begins when someone feels seen, heard, and supported without judgment.

Healing can grow through:

• connection with supportive people
• professional counseling or therapy
• learning healthier coping skills
• compassionate communities that reduce stigma around mental health

No one should have to carry emotional pain alone.

What to Say to Someone Struggling with Self-Harm

Sometimes people want to help but aren’t sure what to say. Simple, compassionate words can make a powerful difference.

Helpful things to say:

• “I’m really glad you told me.”
• “You’re not alone. I’m here with you.”
• “You deserve support and care.”
• “Your feelings matter.”
• “Would you like help finding someone to talk to?”

Things that help most:

✔ listening without judgment
✔ staying calm
✔ showing patience and empathy
✔ encouraging professional support

Avoid minimizing their pain or telling them to “just stop.” Instead, focus on understanding and support.
