We’ve been serving for a full century — from the Downey House fire in 1925 to over 330 calls a year today. Every call, every rescue, every moment — it’s all about our community.

Chatting with a fellow firefighter shortly after the Waynesburg-Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company’s 50th anniversary, former chief Clovis Wright was asked if he thought the department would still be there for the 100th. His answer: “Somebody will carry on.” Wright’s words, recorded as...

Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraiser last night. Your support helps us provide the funding to purchase the necessary equipment to help provide the best fire service protection possible to our residents. Thank you to our members for sacrificing their time away from family and their lives to prepare and work this event. Yesterday was not only busy day for fire company in preparation and hosting this event, but also still responding to multiple calls during this period. Again, thank you to all the family, friends and businesses that support us not just yesterday, but everyday throughout the year.

All of us here at Waynesburg Franklin Township VFC would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!

We hope that your 2026 is filled with joy and celebrations of success as much as our will be. 2026 is a big year for us as we celebrate serving Waynesburg and the surrounding areas for 100 years. We are excited to reach this goal of 100 years of service to our communities and residents, but none of it would possible without the support from the residents, businesses, our members, and most importantly the families of our members that constantly work family schedules to accommodate the fire company activities. Over the past 100 years, countless family dinners and gatherings had empty seats because our members put the priority of the community in a time of need over their own family. 2026 will be a year honoring and celebrating the hard work and dedication of our membership, past and present, that were part of the journey from our inception to what we know today as Company 61 Waynesburg Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company.

In a 1976 interview, former Waynesburg Fire Chief R. Clovis Wright reflects on the early days of firefighting in Waynesburg. He recalls several major fires, including the Downey House Hotel fire just days before Christmas 1925. Wright was one of nine volunteers on the roof when the wall of a neighboring building collapsed onto them. The tragedy, which claimed the lives of five young men, helped prompt the formation of what is now the Waynesburg–Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company.

Interviewed by Frank Van Cleve, Wright shares his experiences with warmth, humor, and insight, offering a vivid picture of small-town fire service and community life as it once was.

This recording is part of the Eva K. Bowlby Public Library’s Greene Thumb oral history project, launched in the late 1970s to preserve local memories through...
