We would like to congratulate Firefighter Josh Major on his well-deserved retirement, which became effective today.

Josh began his journey with our department as a volunteer and was hired full-time in November 1999. For more than two decades, he has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the fire service, the department, and the citizens of Waynesboro.

From the beginning, Josh distinguished himself as a committed firefighter who continually sought to expand his training and knowledge. His accomplishments include earning an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from J. Sargent Reynolds and completing numerous certifications and specialized training throughout his career.

Throughout his service with the department, in addition to his daily responsibilities, Josh served on several committees and helped develop the specifications for multiple engines and the ladder truck. Josh has always been known in our department for his exceptional attention to detail, whether maintaining apparatus, caring for equipment, or supporting station maintenance.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Josh for his many years of dedicated service. We wish him the very best as he enters this next chapter of his life.

We will celebrate the Official Grand Opening of Waynesboro Fire Department Station 2. While we did a flag-raising ceremony in January before the snowstorm to utilize the station during the storm, this official grand opening marks the completion of the final construction and the official grand opening of the station into full operation. Waynesboro Fire Department will be hosting an uncoupling ceremony, a fire department tradition to represent the official dedication of the facility, on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 9am. Following the uncoupling ceremony, we will be hosting an open house throughout the day on April 15 for community members to visit and come tour the station.

While Fire Station 2 was originally scheduled to open in early February, the anticipated weather event this weekend prompted an early opening to better serve our citizens. Over the past two days, members of the WFD worked diligently to make the new station operational. This afternoon, Fire Station 2 was officially placed in service. Within two hours of becoming operational, the station answered five calls for service, immediately enhancing the delivery of fire and emergency services to our community.

Between calls, we celebrated the opening with a flag ceremony. The United States Flag, the Commonwealth of Virginia Flag, and the Fire Department flag were raised to symbolize the station’s opening. Mayor Lee, along with retired Fire Chiefs Charlie Scott and James Bradley, raised the flags in recognition of the station’s opening. Both Chief Scott and Chief Bradley were strong advocates for a fire station on the west end of the city and consistently championed this effort throughout their tenure. It was therefore fitting that they, along with our Mayor, raised the flags for the first time at Station 2.

A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony will be scheduled in the near future once the station is fully completed. The community will be notified as soon as an official date is determined.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our citizens, Mayor Lee, the members of City Council, the City Manager’s Office, and retired Assistant City Manager Mike Wilhelm, who served as the city’s project manager for the fire station, as well as Lantz Construction for their outstanding work in constructing the station and their support in recent days to help make it operational.

Personnel from the City of Waynesboro, the City of Harrisonburg, and Augusta County visited the James River in Richmond to conduct training on Swift Water Operations on Tuesday. This served as a great opportunity to be in water that isn’t often found in the Valley.
