Please be advised that the city is conducting its scheduled outdoor warning siren test today at 1:00 PM. The test is taking place shortly after the recent tornado warning, so we understand that hearing the sirens may cause concern.

🚨 This is only a scheduled test and does not indicate an active emergency.

Please continue to stay weather-aware and monitor official weather and emergency alerts for any new warnings or instructions.

Every day, thousands of students rely on school buses to get to and from school safely. And every day, reckless drivers who aren’t paying attention or even worse don’t think the law applies to them put children at risk by illegally passing the school bus.

That’s why we’ve partnered with the Wayne-Westland Community Schools to launch the School Bus Safety Program through BusPatrol. Through this program, we’re using stop-arm camera technology to protect our children from dangerous drivers who don’t stop for the bus and in doing so put our children’s lives at risk.

The stop-arm cameras used on school buses are designed only to capture vehicles that illegally pass a stopped school bus. The enforcement cameras activate only when the bus’ stop arm and red lights are deployed.

Footage of potential violations is securely stored and used solely for reviewing for potential citations. It can only be accessed by authorized personnel for the purpose of determining whether a violation occurred, and it is retained only for the period required by law. The system is focused on one thing: improving student safety while respecting the privacy of drivers and families.

To avoid getting a ticket for passing a stopped school bus, and to help protect the lives of our children remember to Just Stop…it’s the law!!

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning in the area until 4:30 PM. Take shelter in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

And just like that, School Resource Officer Serman is back for another exciting 2026-2027 school year. Officer Serman is a 2011 graduate of Wayne Memorial High School, and a Marine Corps Veteran. SRO Serman has been with the police department for 5 years.

Although he is assigned to WMHS, SRO Serman makes an effort to be present in all the schools in the community. This year, SRO Serman is looking forward to building stronger relationships with the students. He wants students, parents and staff to know that he is always available and willing to help, no matter how big or small the concern.

The Wayne Police Department is hiring for the positions of Police Service Aide, Police Recruit, and Police Officer. Police Service Aides are part time, the other positions are full time.

The Police Service Aide is a great position if you are looking to get started in the criminal justice field. The Police Recruit and Police Officer positions are a great place to find a long term career! The current salary range for Police Officers is $65,206-$86,941, plus health care, retirement, and various bonuses.

Wayne’s second annual National Night Out was a huge success. Families from around the community had the opportunity to enjoy some food and meet our police officers, firefighters, and DPW workers. Thank you to everyone who helped organize the event, and thanks to all of the citizens who attended!

Chief Strong will be hosting a Police Community Meeting at the Wayne Police Department on 8-27-2026 at 6:00pm. Citizens are welcome to attend in person. For those who don't wish to attend in person, a recording of the meeting will be shown on Youtube, Facebook, and City Cable.

Chief Strong will provide an update on recent police activities, crime trends, crime prevention tips, and a variety of other important issues.

Congratulations to Officer McDonald who graduated from the Wayne County Regional Police Academy last night. In addition to graduating, Officer McDonald was honored with the Christopher Hampton Memorial Award. Officer McDonald will begin her orientation at the Wayne Police Department next week. We look forward to having Officer McDonald join our team.
