Community Volunteer Fire Company #1, Inc. and Wayne Fire Company #4 responded to a reported lightning strike on a residential home following the severe thunderstorms that moved through the area.

Upon arrival, firefighters conducted a thorough investigation of the residence to check for fire extension, electrical hazards, and any hidden damage that can occur following a lightning strike. Crews utilized thermal imaging cameras and other resources to ensure there were no signs of fire within the structure. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

After the scene was stabilized and the fire department’s investigation was completed, control of the incident was transferred to the township Building Department and PSE&G for further evaluation of the structure and electrical systems.

Lightning strikes can cause significant damage to homes and utilities, even when there are no obvious signs of fire. If your home is struck by lightning, immediately report any smoke, burning odors, sparking, or electrical issues by calling 9-1-1.

Stay weather aware and remember: When thunder roars, go indoors.

Earlier today, members of the Wayne Fire Department responded to a 2nd Alarm fire at a local apartment complex. Firefighters from companies 1,2,3, and 5 worked together to quickly contain and extinguish the fire, preventing further extension and protecting neighboring residences.

Fortunately, no injuries to residents, civilians, or emergency responders were reported. Crews remained on scene for an extended period conducting overhaul operations and ensuring all remaining hot spots were extinguished.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the township fire bureau.

We would like to thank all responding agencies for their assistance and professionalism throughout the incident.

As a reminder, working smoke alarms save lives. Ensure the smoke alarms in your home are tested regularly and have fresh batteries.

🔥🚒 THE TRUE COST OF PROTECTING OUR COMMUNITIES 🚒🔥

When you see a wildland firefighter on the fireline, you’re looking at far more than a yellow shirt and a hard hat.

You’re looking at thousands of dollars of specialized safety equipment designed to bring that firefighter home alive.

From fire shelters and Nomex clothing to radios, helmets, boots, gloves, eye protection, packs, and life-saving communication equipment, every piece of gear serves a purpose. Every dollar invested is an investment in survival.

Most people never realize that outfitting a single wildland firefighter today can cost between $5,500 and $8,500+ before they ever step foot on a wildfire.

The boots protect their feet on steep terrain.
The Nomex protects them from heat and flame.
The radio keeps them connected when seconds matter.
The fire shelter is their last line of defense.

These men and women willingly run toward danger to protect lives, homes, forests, and communities.

The next time you see a firefighter on the line, remember: behind every firefighter is a commitment to safety, training, readiness, and sacrifice.

🔥 Every tool has a purpose.
🔥 Every piece of gear can save a life.
🔥 Every firefighter deserves to come home.

Please take a moment to thank the wildland firefighters, dispatchers, mechanics, pilots, support personnel, and families who make this mission possible.

🇺🇸 Courage. Commitment. Community.

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Community Volunteer Fire Company #1 would like to remind everyone to take a moment to honor and remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.

As families gather to celebrate the holiday weekend, we also ask everyone to keep fire safety in mind — especially when it comes to fireworks and outdoor fires. Fireworks can quickly lead to brush fires, structure fires, and serious injuries, particularly during dry weather conditions. In New Jersey, only certain novelty fireworks are legal for consumer use, and all fireworks should be used responsibly and away from homes, vehicles, dry grass, and wooded areas.

Please celebrate safely this weekend:
• Keep a hose or extinguisher nearby
• Never allow children to use fireworks unsupervised
• Properly dispose of hot fireworks in water
• Avoid setting off fireworks near brush or wooded areas
• Never leave grills or fire pits unattended

From all of us at Company #1, have a safe Memorial Day weekend and thank you to all who have served.

Last night, members of Community Volunteer Fire Company #1 completed a multi-scenario Wildland Fire Operations drill in preparation for the ongoing spring fire season and the upcoming fall fire season later this year.

Crews trained on deployable pump operations, water supply and hose lays, operation of our UTV Wildland unit, and Engine 1-5, our brush truck, focusing on tactics and coordination used during rapidly expanding brush and woodland fire incidents.

Community Volunteer Fire Company #1 remains the only fire company in Wayne with NWCG Credentialed Wildland Firefighters. Multiple members also serve with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service in varying operational roles including the Division A Incident Management Team, District Warden positions, and as active wildland crew members throughout the state.

As wildfire activity continues to increase across New Jersey, training like this ensures our members remain prepared to operate safely and effectively during brush fire and wildfire incidents both within Wayne Township and across the region.

Photos from last night’s drill are attached below.
