You don’t have to look like you’re struggling to be struggling.
That may be one of the most important conversations we have this September.
We’re pretty good at noticing when someone completely falls apart. But what about before that?
They may still show up for shift. Still answer the radio. Still crack jokes. Still take care of everyone else. That doesn’t mean they’re okay.
September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month and Recovery Month, and we think those two belong in the same conversation.
We need to normalize asking our people, “Are you okay?” And when something feels off, asking again. Not because we have all the answers. Not because we need to fix them. But because sometimes somebody needs to know someone noticed.
And just as importantly, we need to keep talking about recovery.
And never forget the other side of this message: people get help, people heal, and people recover.
Su***de prevention shouldn’t begin at the crisis. It starts with connection. It starts with noticing. It starts with a conversation.
Check on your people. And then check on them again.
Help. Healing. Hope. That’s GRIT. 💜🩵

20 Hours of Remembrance 🕯️

This past Friday marked five years since the devastating August 21, 2021 flood that forever changed Waverly and Humphreys County and took the lives of 20 members of our community.

As part of the 20 Hours of Remembrance, GRIT at Magnolia Meadows volunteered to keep watch over the memorial candles from 2:00–3:00 PM. Several of our clients chose to volunteer alongside staff, taking an hour simply to show up, stand in remembrance, and support the community we are proud to be part of.

For many of the first responders in this area, August 21st carries memories that go far beyond the flood itself. They responded, searched, rescued, recovered, and cared for their neighbors while experiencing the same loss within their own community.

We were honored to stand watch.

To the 20 lives lost, the families who continue to carry their memory, and the community that continues to heal, we remember. 🕯️

🧠 Let's build a stronger referral network for first responders.

One of the questions I hear most often is:

"Do you know a therapist in my state who understands first responder culture?"

I'd love your help creating a broader network of clinicians who are passionate about serving this community.

If you are a mental health clinician who works with first responders, please share the following in the comments:

📍 State(s) where you are licensed
🎓 Professional license/credentials (LPC, LMHC, LCSW, LMFT, Psychologist, Psychiatrist, etc.)
🌐 Website or practice link

If you'd like, you can also include:
🚑 The first responder populations you serve (EMS, Fire, Law Enforcement, Dispatch, Corrections, Military, etc.)
💻 Whether you offer telehealth, in-person services, or both.

My hope is that this thread becomes a valuable resource for first responders who are looking for culturally informed mental health care close to home.

Please feel free to tag clinicians you trust who have experience working with first responders.

Together, we can make it easier for those who serve our communities to find the support they deserve.

Saving the Brave is proud to welcome Magnolia Meadows/GRIT as a resource partner on our film.

This week our Saving the Brave crew heads to the Nashville area to shoot on location at Magnolia Meadows, pulling back the curtain on what residential treatment for first responders actually looks like.

Pictured are Bryan D'Onofrio (Director of Business Development), David Dachinger (Film EP), and Michelle Madden (Executive Director), posing here with Herky the Hawk at a conference at the University of Iowa.

We appreciate them and their team for making this visit possible.
