Today we swore in the newest member of the Wauwatosa Police Department, Officer Jason Trzebiatowski. He brings prior law enforcement experience to our team and will begin his journey with new officer orientation this weekend before starting the Field Training Program.

We’re proud to share some of the work happening behind the scenes at the Wauwatosa Police Department.

Sergeant Patnode-Fonseca and Captain Wrucke recently joined Dr. Eric Piza of Northeastern University at the New York Public Safety Symposium to present “Leading Change: Police-Led Science in the Wauwatosa, WI Police Department.”

Their presentation highlighted Wauwatosa’s work through a National Institute of Justice grant focused on hot spots policing—using data to identify places experiencing higher levels of crime or calls for service, then focusing police resources where they can have the greatest impact.

It’s about taking a closer look at what’s happening in our community, using evidence to guide our approach, and measuring what works.

We appreciate the opportunity to share what we’re learning, learn from other public-safety leaders across the country and continue looking for ways to improve how we serve Wauwatosa.

Did you know: 1 in 5 adults live with a mental illness.

As law enforcement officers, we respond to many situations involving people in crisis. Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) is a 40-hour training program designed to improve the outcomes of police interactions with people living with mental illnesses. CIT equips our officers with the skills to identify, respond to and de-escalate incidents with individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis.

CIT programs also create connections between law enforcement, mental health providers, hospital emergency services, and individuals with mental illness and their families.

A strong mental health system is an important part of a safe and healthy community. We appreciate NAMI for providing this important training and helping our officers better serve people experiencing a mental health crisis.

The Wauwatosa West High School Homecoming Parade is today, October 2, at 5 p.m.

The parade starts at the high school and will travel:
• West on W. Center St. to N. 122nd St.
• North to W. Hadley St.
• East to N. 117th St.
• South to W. Center St. and back to the high school

🚧 Plan ahead: Streets along the parade route will be closed during the event.

Partnerships make a difference.

Earlier this month, officers from the CPKC Police Department presented the Wauwatosa Police Department with a grant to support our expanding Drone Unit.

Our Drone Unit has become an important resource for our officers, helping locate missing people, search for dangerous suspects, and provide additional situational awareness during large community events.

We’re proud to partner with CPKC Police on rail safety initiatives and our annual holiday event in Wauwatosa. Their continued support will help us safely transport and deploy our drone equipment, while also extending the amount of time our drones can remain airborne.

We appreciate CPKC Police for investing in technology that helps us enhance public safety and better serve the Wauwatosa community.
