Here is a guide to help you understand what va**ng is, its appeal to youth and research about both the risks and unknowns. It identifies some signs to look for and what to do if you are concerned that a child may try or actually is va**ng, and offers advice on what to say when answering questions about va**ng.

CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is the largest non-psychoactive component of ma*****na. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the most well-known component of ma*****na, which produces the high. CBD is becoming more widely available, and like va**ng, is often marketed to young people. CBD is available as tinctures, edibles, sprays, va**ng liquid, capsules and items such as gels, hand lotions and shampoos. These are widely available, on-line and in local stores. They vary in price and CBD content.

CBD can be derived from either h**p or ma*****na. H**p derived CBD is legal in all states and ma*****na derived CBD is legal in some. The CBD here in Wisconsin comes from h**p, so can be legally sold in health food and other stores.

CBD can produce the medicinal benefits of cannabis without the high; especially for cancer, serious chronic pain and epilepsy. Youth in particular are using CBD as a homeopathic remedy for pain relief, depression and anxiety symptoms, acne, insomnia and boosting productivity. However, the CBD used in medical trials is much different than the CBD sold in stores to consumers. As with all supplements in the United States, CBD is not regulated by the FDA, thus users have to rely on the quality assurances of the companies that manufacture and sell them.

CBD does not appear to be dangerous in and of itself for short-term use, but many CBD products contain dangerous chemicals or synthetic CBD oil. For the most part, side effects from CBD alone are minor (dry mouth, dizziness, nausea), but they can be serious if the CBD products interact with other medications one may be taking.

It may be hard to know if one is consuming CBD because of the minimal side effects and absence of psychoactive effects. If you are concerned, talk with your youth about CBD just like any other substance. Start a conversation about why they’re interested in it, how it makes them feel and why feel the need to use it. Come from a place of understanding and patience, and work to help your son or daughter make healthy decisions.

Five ways to build "digital resilience"; help them have digital wisdom, be ready for cyberbullying and make good cyber-decisions.

In 2017 we heard a lot about digital resilience, but do we understand what it is? Helping our teens be ready for online hate and digital discourse offline can better prepare them when they are faced with it. Reality is that incivility exists – sadly this is a human behavior that we don’t have co...

Our Story

Tosa United at the Wauwatosa School District engages youth, family, and community members as partners in the students’ educational journey.

These partners, as mentors to students, are allied with the schools, as we seek to help students find success both academically and personally by reducing unhealthy youth risk behavior and promoting healthy decisions.

Programs, events, and ongoing communication will help partners identify, discuss, understand, and get help for risk behavior such as; alcohol, to***co, and other drug use; injury, violence, harassment, or an unhealthy diet; stress, depression or other mental health/behavioral challenges.
