"Many of us were assigned to read To Kill a Mockingbird in high school. I loved this novel and Harper Lee’s private life only made her more intriguing. She gave very few sanctioned interviews, which makes The Mockingbird Next Door by Marja Mills all the more remarkable. Mills, a journalist for the Chicago Tribune, set out to write a feature on Harper Lee. They developed an unexpected friendship, becoming so close that Mills moved next door to the sisters while researching this book. This access to the Lees was unprecedented and resulted in a beautifully told, authorized biography of their lives. The book explores Harper Lee’s complicated relationship with fame, the small town where she grew up, and her relationship with her sister, Alice, an attorney who practiced law in their hometown well into her nineties. The two sisters had a compelling relationship. If you share my curiosity about the author behind one of America’s most enduring novels, grab it from the library or borrow the audiobook from Libby like I did."

Have you checked out any games from our Library of Things? For our , Circulation Supervisor Alanna brings us a board game her family checked out from the Library of Things. "Ticket to Ride: First Journey is a rare game that engages both our 13 year old and her parents. It's easy to get the hang of and doesn't take too long to complete - there's no need to clear the afternoon. The competitive aspect of it is fun but not vicious and you even learn a little geography along the way. Hands down, my favorite family game in our Library of Things collection."

Be sure to look for family fun in our Library of Things, located on the first floor next to the circulation desk.

Adult Librarian Meagan brings us a unique book--a history of Russia told through trees!!
"Russian history is fascinating, complicated, and something I mostly associate with Romanovs, serfs, and revolution. But the natural history of the country, and the way that the vast and varied forests of the Russian empire have been impacted by politics, was something I had never considered. As soon as I saw this one pop up in reviews I had to read it! It's a very particular way of learning about a country's history, values, and culture."

How awesome is this picture we received? Here's Abby, who just graduated from Auburn University, proudly showing off her Wauwatosa Public Library Card. As a kid Abby used to attend story time at the library. When she was a teen, she'd walk across the street to the library to work on homework after getting out of school at Longfellow.. Now that she's all grown up, she's still carrying her library card. Congratulations, Abby!

Adult Librarian Ann brings us a great fiction title for this week's . "Hard Town is the sequel to The Ascent (also a very good book). I really enjoyed this suspenseful novel featuring the character Kurt Argento, who is an ex-Detroit police officer who gets pulled into investigating the disappearance of two people in a small town in Arizona.

Fun facts: The author was a city of Milwaukee police officer and holds a BA from Marquette University."

If you're in the mood for this, get it at the library or place a hold in CountyCat.

"I find myself “caught” in 2 excellent books. “Destiny of the Republic” is a recent biography of President James Garfield and the man who assassinated him. I never knew much about Garfield. What an amazing man and incredible life story. I also had no idea the impact of that assassination. We went from one of the most honest and capable presidents to one of the most corrupt and incompetent at a pivotal point in time shortly after the civil war. I borrowed “Beneath the Flames” after reading a list in the Milwaukee Magazine (also from the library) of books where the City of Milwaukee plays a central role. In this book a young volunteer firefighter leaves rural northern Wisconsin to try and escape memories of a tragedy and joins the Milwaukee Fire Department shortly after 9/11. Not far in but it is a page turner so far and written by a retired Milwaukee firefighter so seemingly very true to life and a vivid depiction of the fire service."

Want to read one of these? Put a hold on through CountyCat or talk to one of our librarians at the information desk.
