As Mental Illness Awareness Week comes to a close today, we want to remind every Milwaukee County resident of one essential truth: Mental health care doesn't stop when this week ends.

Over the past week, we’ve talked about breaking stigma, expanding access to life-saving harm reduction tools, getting educated on fentanyl and overdose prevention, and adopting healthy coping strategies. Now, it's about keeping that conversation alive every single day of the year.

Whether you are navigating a long-term mental health condition, supporting a loved one through recovery, or going through a tough season yourself, Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Services (BHS) and our local community partners are here for you; no judgment, no barriers.

Year-Round Local Resources & Tools:

• Milwaukee County 24/7 Crisis Line: Call (414) 257-7222
• National Su***de & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988
• Harm Reduction Vending Machines: Free access to Narcan, test strips, and cable locks across Milwaukee County.
• Education & Prevention: Explore FOCUS | Better To Know and Better Ways To Cope to find non-judgmental guidance and community support programs.

Let’s carry the empathy, awareness, and action from this week into every week that follows. Take care of yourself, check in on your neighbors, and never hesitate to reach out for help.

Knowledge is one of our strongest tools in supporting mental health and saving lives. As part of Mental Illness Awareness Week, we’re encouraging all Milwaukee County residents to get informed about substance misuse and fentanyl risks.

Through Milwaukee County's FOCUS | Better To Know initiative, the message is simple:

1. Know the truth about substance risks in our neighborhoods.
2. Know what to do during an emergency or crisis.
3. Know where to go for compassionate, non-judgmental treatment.
4. Know how to help a loved one struggling with mental health or addiction.

Taking time to learn can make the difference for a friend, neighbor, or family member.

As we step into October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are reminded of the power of early detection, regular screenings, and breaking down barriers to health equity across Milwaukee County.

At the same time, building a truly healthy community means looking at wellness from every angle. Public health relies on connection, prevention, and meeting people where they are—whether that's expanding access to life-saving cancer screenings or championing vital harm reduction initiatives, like distributing Narcan, expanding resource placement, and supporting our local providers through programs like Better Ways to Cope.

Both movements are rooted in the same mission: removing stigma, sharing resources, and ensuring every single Milwaukee County resident has access to compassionate, judgment-free care.

Let's look out for one another, spread awareness, and make health and healing a priority. Find resources below:
