Homme Heights of Wausau Established by Homme Inc. of Wisconsin, Homme Heights of Wausau is an affiliate of Homme Home of Wittenberg in Wittenberg, Wisconsin.

The sister campuses boast historic roots of service and charity to senior adults dating back to the 1880s.

MONARCHS, WELCOME TO YOUR NEW FAVORITE SPOT! 🦋

A massive shout-out to the incredible work by the North Central Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association and Scouting Troop #439 for bringing a gorgeous, low-maintenance Monarch Butterfly Garden to our campus!

Along with the Master Gardeners, an extra-special round of applause goes out to Scout Nora S., who played a huge role in planning and constructing this amazing space. It took months of fine-tuned planning and a whole lot of eager hands to plant these beautiful Wisconsin-native plants—all packed into one epic, single-day project!

We are absolutely thrilled to have this special sanctuary on our campus. We all love Monarch butterflies, so you can bet we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for their grand arrival. Once they discover this little paradise, they’ll never want to leave!

This project was made possible through a grant from the North Central Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association, a gift from the Marion Schultz estate, and numerous donations by Monarch enthusiasts on the Homme Heights campus.

We have some incredibly stealthy visitors – well these two aren’t -- hiding in plain sight around our Homme Heights camp...

We have some incredibly stealthy visitors – well these two aren’t -- hiding in plain sight around our Homme Heights campus right now! We believe we’ve spotted a few gorgeous Waved Sphinx Moths (Ceratomia undulosa) resting nearby.

With a massive 4-inch wingspan and intricate, wavy patterns of dark brown, gray, and black, these stunning native giants are absolute masters of crypsis (the scientific word for visual camouflage). In ancient folklore, creatures with this kind of talent were often associated with invisibility or shape-shifting!

During the day, they tuck their antennae away and press themselves completely flat against wooden structures or tree trunks, perfectly mimicking lichen and cracked bark. They blend in so well that predators—and humans—walk right past them without ever knowing they are being watched!

Early June is prime time for them to emerge in Wisconsin. Keep your eyes peeled for tree trunks, brick walls, and near campus lights over the next few weeks. You never know what amazing local wildlife you’ll run into right here on our beautiful grounds! Interestingly enough, they emerge out of their coccoons without a mouth, only living a few weeks by living off the energy they stored when they were a caterpillar.

Sunday Thought: We routinely pause to admire the ancient architecture of the forest or the quiet poetry of a sweeping oak tree, yet we often walk past the living masterpieces right in front of us. Nature is so vibrant that it’s easy to look out at the grounds at Homme Heights and imagine the trees clapping their hands, celebrating the beautiful fellowship gathered inside the Homme Adult Day Center.

While the forest is a stunning backdrop, it is humanity that gives it meaning. A tree can be magnificent, but it cannot love, comfort, or share a memory. The natural world is incredible, but the human spirit—with its infinite capacity to care, create, and connect—is the true masterpiece we offer to each other.

The neighborhood just got a whole lot safer for the songbirds!

We are stoked about these new raven-proof birdhouses, donated by the "Birds of Joy" project. These wild-bird havens were built with love (and some great skill) by the Rib Lake High School Shop Class and Cahoots Adult Day Service out of Waupaca, WI.
