Next in the series: Our 1937 Sealand International Engine. This was the first motorized apparatus in our history. The rig served as our only engine for almost 30 years until it was relegated to second fiddle in 1961 with the delivery of the GMC engine profiled earlier.

During its many years of service, this engine responded to many fires and pumped long hours. Being a PTO type pump, we are told it took many trophies at musters for being the fastest to get water on the target.

The unit was officially retired in 1971 and we lost track of it for many years until one of our members found it being used as a playground piece at a local campground in the mid-1980’s. We asked if we could have it back and restore it back to its original glory.

We began restoring “the 37” as we called it, and it was completed in time for our 100th Anniversary in 1986. Since then it has been part of many events such as parades, open houses, and celebrations (front and center at our 130th anniversary, during the pandemic in 2021). The “37” even served as a caisson in the funeral of a local fire chief.

Today, we are again restoring the old engine and hope to get it running in the near future. (You how hard it is to get parts for a 1937 gasoline engine? …) It presently resides in our carriage shed in the rear of our station with our original piece of apparatus, our 1896 hose cart. We will profile that next.

In preparation of celebrating the Atwood Hose Fire Company 130th Anniversary this year, from time to time, we will be posting pictures from throughout our history.

Today we begin with our 1961 GMC Engine, affectionately referred to as "the Jimmy" This engine was delivered in 1961 and served as our front line engine until 1971 when our CF Mack engine was delivered.

The truck was built by the Farrar Company shops in MA. It was equipped with a 750 GPM 2-stage Barton-American pump and 750 gallons of water.

This truck was retired in 1986 when it was replaced by a R-Model Mack Hose Tender. It briefly served the Town of Plainfield Public Works as a dust control/water truck before being permanently retired in 1988.

This truck responded to several large scale fires during its service with our company and pumped reliably for many hours in both hot and cold weather.

The engine will be missed by those who served on the "Jimmy Crew".

A busy day indeed. It began at 0900 this morning when we were proud to give a Shepard Hill Elementary School student a ride to school as he was one of the winners of thier contest to collect food for Project PIN. SHE PTO

Then at 1030 we responded to a 1st alarm structure fire in Danielson. Crews staffed both ET196 and HT196. Upon arrival the ET196 crew assisted with overhaul while HT196 stood ready in case an additional water supply was required. Our units were released after 30 minutes.

Last evening we trained with our mutual aid partners Moosup Fire Department Central Village Fire Company Station 97 Plainfield Fire Co. #1 on rural water supply operations.

HT196 drafted from a pond and filled tankers who then traveled to dump their water into portable tanks where an engine pumped out of the tanks to a aerial unit. This simulated water supply operations in areas without hydrants.

Practice like you work.

The fire and explosion at a Maine lumber mill that killed one firefighter and injured several other people earlier this month involved combustible dust, according to new information released today by the Office of the Maine State Fire Marshal.

Combustible dust is a significant yet often misunderstood industrial hazard that can result in flash fires and even explosions under certain conditions.
