For your information, the fire department will be practicing accident scene setup in a few spots around the township Monday July 20. I dont want to give the actual roads that we are planning to be on because it needs to stay secret from the firemen. If you are driving around the township tomorrow night between 7 & 9, please be patient with us. The road we are on may be briefly closed depending on the scenario we are working on.

Last night was a very special night for 3 of us on the Alto Fire Department. This month marks 25 years of service for Jon Bruins, Wayne Bailey, & myself (Cory Kok). It doesn't hardly seem like its been that long... but that seems to be what a lot of people say as they get older. Jon, Wayne & I took our Firefighter class together with Steve B**r as our instructor. We have spent a lot of the last 25 years as officers for the department in one role or another. For the last 12 years I have been the Chief, Jon the Asst Chief, & Wayne has been the training officer. We work well together in our different roles.

I just want to say thank you to Jon & Wayne for all the hard work that you have put in over the years. We've had our ups & downs but the fire department has kept moving forward & with the new members we have taken on over the years, the future looks bright for the Alto Fire Department.

I dont do this often but I have a personal note to share, this 25th anniversary was very special for me. The Alto Fire Department has a business meeting after a practice once a month. Starting in 2001 & going until now in 2026, I have never missed our monthly business meeting. That makes 300 meetings in a row. I have made it a top priority in my Fire fighting career to be at that monthly business meeting, & I'm hoping that present & future firefighters will do their absolute best at coming to these meetings as well. These are important for keeping the Alto Fire Department moving in a positive direction.

Well... with the busyness of everything that has been going on this spring, this post is long overdue.

Our April practice & business meeting was a little bittersweet. April marked a milestone for Joe Vande Zande as he celebrated 35 years with the Alto Fire Department. It also marked the end of his volunteer firefighter career as he retired from the department that night.

Joe has been a very prominent member of the Alto Fire Department. Joe served as training officer back in the early 2000's & later served for a few years as our secretary/treasurer. Joe was never afraid to share his opinions whether it was at practice, in a business meeting or on the fire ground. His voice was always loud & heard by everyone. Sometimes this was good... & sometimes bad. I know I locked horns with Joe a couple of times over the years, & voices were raised over some issues. But one thing is for certain... Joe always had what was best for the department on his mind, & he fought for that.

Joe rarely missed a call. Going back over the last few years he made at least 90% of the calls each year. Joe had been our main water truck driver for the last number of years. Between Joe & I we were usually 2 of the first 4 guys who got to the station. Being the Chief of a volunteer department, you sometimes wonder what kind of attendance you are going to have at a call. Holidays & spring & fall field work can affect who is available & how quickly can everyone get to the call. That initial response & initial atack is important. So as I come into the station I glance around to see how many are there & who is there so we can start planning our response. When I saw Joe come into the building, I knew the water truck would be covered & covered well. There are some big shoes to fill there with his adsence.

Joe was also one of the main recruiters for the Alto Fire Department. At any event we had, Joe would be hitting up potential candidates for volunteer firefighters. We even had some firefighters over the years that have left the department for one reason or another & Joe would always try to encourage them to come back. Not sure he has ever been successful with getting any of them back... but he tried.

Joe had some very nice words to say about the Alto Fire Department at his final meeting & said that he will continue to help us out at the Alto Fair selling raffle tickets, recruiting, & maybe grilling a few pork chops for our fundraiser in the spring.

So on behalf of all of us here at the Alto Fire Department, thank you Joe for your 35 years of commitment & dedication to the Alto Fire Department. There are not too many that have served for that long with the Alto Fire Department. It is an amazing accomplishment. Enjoy your well deserved retirement & we look forward to you returning to help out where you can.
