DID YOU KNOW? Waupaca has a Sister City in Japan โ€” Mitoyo City!

Waupacaโ€™s international friendship began in 1994 with the town of Nio, Japan, through a student exchange program focused on cultural understanding and education. That August, five junior high students and two teachers from Nio became the first visitors to enjoy a homestay experience in Waupaca.

The following summer, six Waupaca students and two chaperones traveled to Japan, completing the first official exchange. Over the years, students, families, teachers, and city officials have continued building friendships and cultural connections across the globe. ๐ŸŒ

In 1994, the Waupaca Common Council formally adopted a Sister City agreement with Nio. When Nio merged with nearby communities in 2006 to become Mitoyo City, the partnership proudly continued.

Today, the Waupacaโ€“Mitoyo relationship remains a symbol of friendship, learning, and international connection. โค๏ธ
