Come see us in Rockford! Kyan, our newest member, stands watch at our booth on opening night of the 2026 Rockford Boat, Vacation & Fishing Show — confidently fielding dozens of boating safety questions. This guy knows his regs better than Poseidon himself. If you’re in the area, swing by the Mercyhealth Indoor Sports Center and say hello to Kyan and our other awesome volunteers as they share the safe boating message.

For 80 years, New England boaters have leaned on Coast Guard District 1 for trouble on the water, while Floridians relied on District 7, and Great Lakes boaters on District 9. This year, the Department of Homeland Security replaced the numbered system established during World War II with names for the regions they serve.

The change is meant to help the public more easily “find and understand the districts in which they live, recreate, and operate,” according to the Coast Guard. The name changes have no effect on the geographic areas they cover.

Do you know the difference between a hurricane watch and warning?

A watch means that tropical storm or hurricane conditions are possible in the area and can be issued up to 48 hours in advance of storm force winds.

A warning means tropical storm or hurricane force conditions are expected in the warning area and can be issued up to 36 hours in advance of storm force winds.

In both situations, you should follow local emergency management guidelines for shelter and safety.
