Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandfathers, stepfathers, mentors, and father figures who provide love, encouragement, and stability to children.

At Family Promise of Waukesha County , we serve many single-parent households led by mothers, while also recognizing the essential role fathers play in the lives of their children. Many dads face unique barriers to remaining involved with their children, including housing instability, financial challenges, transportation barriers, and limited support systems. Despite these obstacles, many fathers are working hard to provide stability and hope for their families.

Recently, we met a father of two young children who was doing everything he could to provide for his family. Despite working full-time, the family lacked stable housing and was staying wherever they could, sometimes even sleeping outside. Transportation challenges, poor credit, and limited support made the road ahead uncertain.

Together, we identified housing opportunities with fewer barriers, and he eventually secured a two-bedroom apartment where his family could begin again. Family Promise of Waukesha County provided the security deposit and first month's rent, while St. Vincent De Paul Society of Waukesha County helped furnish the apartment. He also secured a higher-paying job, creating greater stability for his children.

Today, this family is safely housed, a reminder that with early intervention, community support, and determination, families can overcome homelessness and build lasting stability.

Happy Father's Day to all those working every day to provide hope and opportunity for their children.

Today, we honor Juneteenth and the significance of this day in our nation's history. It is a time to reflect on the end of slavery in the United States, recognize the progress that has been made, and also acknowledge the work that continues as we move forward together.

As an organization serving families experiencing homelessness, we recognize the systemic inequities that continue to impact access to safe and stable housing. We remain committed to supporting families as they move from homelessness into stable housing.

Our office will be closed today, Friday, June 19, in observance of the holiday.

After losing their housing due to job loss, a family found themselves living in a hotel for several months while searching for a path back to stability. Through Family Promise of Waukesha County Shelter Diversion program they worked closely with a family advocate who connected them with mental health and addiction treatment resources and provided household items and gift cards to help meet their immediate needs.

During their time in the program, the father secured employment, and the family was approved to purchase a mobile home just as their funds for the hotel were running out. Our agency was able to provide the down payment needed to complete the purchase, helping the family avoid entering shelter and move directly into permanent housing. They now have a safe, stable home where they can build equity, establish roots in their community, and create a brighter future.

This success story highlights the importance of Shelter Diversion as an early intervention strategy. Rather than immediately turning to emergency shelter, diversion focuses on exploring alternative housing options, identifying available resources, and providing targeted assistance to help families quickly resolve a housing crisis. By working collaboratively with families to find creative solutions, diversion can prevent homelessness, reduce trauma and disruption, and connect households to stable housing more quickly. In this case, a timely investment and housing-focused approach helped a family transition directly into homeownership and long-term stability.

We’re looking for volunteers to partner with our Fresh Start Furnishing Program.

This program helps families we work with get the essential furniture they need to turn an empty space into a home. We rely on volunteers to help make that happen by assisting with moving furniture into and out of apartments, helping families get set up in their new or current units, and picking up furniture donations from the community.

This is hands-on work that directly supports families during important transitions into permanent housing. We are especially looking for helpers available next Thursday, 6/11, or Friday, 6/12, to assist with an upcoming move. If you are interested in being part of the moving crew, please reach out to: [email protected].
