Today marks 25 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that day, leaving an enduring impact on our nation and communities around the world.

The City of Waukegan is partnering with the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) and the Waukegan Park District to host a Community Recycling Event on Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 9am to 12pm at the Park Maintenance Facility, located at 2211 Ernie Krueger Circle.

Residents may drop off items that will be reused, recycled, or donated to local non-profit organizations. The following items will be accepted, with some exceptions:

- Accessories (Backpacks, Belts, Duffle Bags, Hats, Purses, and Scarves)
- Batteries (Household Batteries)
- Bicycles
- Books
- Bulbs
- Canned Food (Non-Expired)
- Clothes and Textiles
- Diapers and Wipes
- Electronics
- Eyeglasses, Hearing Aids, and Keys
- Footwear (Boots and Shoes)
- Linens (Bedding, Blankets, Curtains, and Towels)
- Musical Instruments
- Plastic Film
- Sports Equipment
- Stuffed and Plush Animals

The Waukegan Fire Department is hosting a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Friday, September 11, 2026 at 9am at Fireman's Memorial Park, located at 2115 Dover Road. The ceremony will honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001 and pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the first responders and heroes who answered the call. Due to road construction and resurfacing, parking is currently affected on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.

Parking on both the east and west sides of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. will be affected by construction, with intermittent parking closures continuing until construction is complete.

Parking for City of Waukegan Business is available in the rear parking lot of City Hall/Waukegan Police Department, accessible from West Street. Street parking is also on West Street.

A decorated combat veteran and a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, Chief Burleson has served the City of Waukegan as a firefighter and paramedic since 1999 while concurrently serving in the Illinois Army National Guard. Having overseen daily emergency operations and strategic planning as Deputy Chief, Chief Burleson has the leadership and extensive experience to safeguard his hometown. Congratulations, Chief Burleson!
