As we gear up for Fire Prevention Month, Sparky is visiting a different department each week to make sure everyone is staying safe. Today’s stop: Waukee Parks & Recreation! He explored some of the parks and trails and even spotted a fire hydrant that was clearly marked and free of anything blocking it. Do you know where Sparky found this one?

On July 4, 2026, the crew was dispatched for a reported choking incident. Upon arrival, they found a male patient in cardiac arrest and immediately initiated CPR. The crew provided advanced life support, including defibrillation, and successfully restored the patient’s pulse. The patient was transported to a local hospital and was later discharged.

We are proud to recognize these members for their quick response, teamwork, and lifesaving actions that made a difference when every second counted.

You might know “Stayin’ Alive” by Bees Gees as the go-to CPR song, but there many songs that fall right in the 100-120 beats per minute range. If any of these summer 2026 hits have been on repeat in your head, know that you can use them to pace chest compressions:

1. “Man I Need” by Olivia Dean
2. “Dracula” – JENNIE Remix by Tame Impala and JENNIE
3. “Choosin’ Texas” by Ella Langley
4. “Dai Dai” by Shakira and Burna Boy
5. “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson

At the station, our fire trucks stay plugged in because we have important technology inside. One especially critical piece is our computer. When we’re responding to an emergency, it gives us real-time updates from dispatch, helps us navigate to the call and lets us pull up site plans for commercial buildings before we arrive. That means our crews have critical information they need before we ever step through the door.

If sirens or lights come up behind you in a roundabout, what do you do? Your first instinct might be to stop to let them go around, but stopping in a roundabout can block the emergency vehicle and slow them down. Instead, safely exit the roundabout, then pull over and give them room to pass. If you see an emergency vehicle approaching before you enter the roundabout, pull over and let them go through first.

Remember, wait until all fire and police vehicles have passed before getting back on the road.

We teamed up with the Waukee Police Department and Waukee Parks and Recreation for a fun Home Alone Awareness Camp. Campers learned about fire escape plans, how to call 911, stranger danger and cooking safety. They also got to climb inside a firetruck, ambulance and police car! One of our favorite parts was answering questions and hearing their thoughts along the way.
