Congressman Byron Donalds packed the house today at Java Cafe for a meet-and-greet and took questions from those in attendance. There was a wide variety of ages represented, including many veterans, farmers, business owners, and community members from across our area.
Questions covered topics ranging from agriculture and water resources to economic development and creating opportunities for young college graduates to stay and work in Florida.

Currently, Donalds is leading the 2026 Republican gubernatorial field. Recent polling of likely Republican primary voters shows him with a significant lead over the rest of the field, making him an early frontrunner in the race. For rural counties like Hardee County, the governor's race matters. Decisions made in Tallahassee affect agriculture, water policy, property rights, transportation funding, economic development, and how growth is managed across rural Florida.

After the event, I spoke with several veterans and farmers who attended. While some appreciated the opportunity to hear directly from a candidate for governor, others said they were not fully satisfied with some of the answers given on agricultural issues. One thing that seemed clear from the conversations afterward was that many people in the room are still weighing their options and have not yet decided who will earn their vote.

Regardless of where people stand politically, it was encouraging to see so many citizens engaged in the process, asking thoughtful questions, and taking an active interest in the future of Florida and rural communities like Hardee County.

I absolutely agree with the opinion of Ms Wyatt and I’m pretty certain that none of the three women that were formerly commissioners are in favor of this possibility.
