⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE FOR TODAY ⚠️

The US National Weather Service Binghamton NY has updated the forecast, and confidence is increasing that portions of our area could experience strong to severe thunderstorms later today.

🟡 Most of the region, including Schuyler County, is now under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

⏰ Timing:
While a few showers are possible this morning and into the early afternoon, the primary threat for severe thunderstorms is expected from the mid-to-late afternoon through the evening hours.

⚠️ Main Threats:
💨 Strong to damaging wind gusts
🧊 Hail

Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible, and conditions may change quickly if storms develop. Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts, have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, and be prepared to move indoors if threatening weather approaches.

If you have outdoor plans this afternoon or evening, keep a close eye on the weather and be prepared to adjust your activities as needed.

The Schuyler County Emergency Management Office will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as information becomes available.

⚠️ WEATHER AWARENESS MESSAGE ⚠️

According to the US National Weather Service Binghamton NY, there is the potential for thunderstorms across the region this weekend.

At this time, confidence in the exact timing and locations of any severe weather remains uncertain. However, Schuyler County is currently within an area identified as having a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon and evening.

If severe thunderstorms develop, they could produce:
🌩️ Damaging wind gusts
🧊 Large hail
🌧️ Heavy rainfall and localized ponding of water

Now is a good time to review your plans for outdoor activities, monitor weather forecasts, and ensure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.

The forecast may continue to change as we get closer to the event. The Schuyler County Emergency Management Office will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary.

Stay weather aware and plan accordingly.

Showers and thunderstorms return to the forecast Saturday afternoon and evening. Some of them may be strong to severe with gusty winds and hail. The highest chances are for areas in yellow (level 2).

🚒 Class Starts Tomorrow – Limited Seats Still Available!

The Principles of Instruction course begins tomorrow at the Watkins Glen Fire Department, and there are still a few seats available.

This 15-hour course is designed for fire service personnel who want to develop their instructional skills and become more effective trainers and leaders within their organizations. Participants will learn the fundamentals of lesson planning, instructional delivery, working with adult learners, meeting diverse learning needs, and the instructor's role in safety.

The Schuyler County Emergency Management Office would like to make residents aware of planned electrical service upgrades being conducted by the Village of Watkins Glen Electric Department.

Beginning Tuesday, June 2, through Thursday, June 4, brief temporary power outages may occur throughout the day in limited areas of the Village. While outages are expected to be short in duration and affect only a small number of customers, residents are encouraged to plan accordingly for any devices, appliances, or activities that could be impacted by a brief interruption in electrical service.

WARNING from the SCSO Marine Patrol

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, water levels on Seneca Lake are beginning to recede, but the lake remains approximately 12–14 inches above normal summer levels. Large debris continues to surface throughout the lake, including partially submerged logs capable of causing catastrophic damage to boats and serious injury to passengers.
Debris of any kind floating just below the surface can be extremely difficult to see, especially during low-light conditions or while towing skiers, tubers, or wake surfers.
The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office urges all boaters to reduce speeds, maintain a sharp lookout at all times, and use extreme caution underway throughout the holiday weekend.

🌡️ With temperatures expected to top 90° today and tomorrow, Schuyler County Emergency Management urges residents and visitors to take precautions during the heat. While temperatures are expected to drop significantly afterward, extreme heat can quickly become dangerous.

Heat-related illnesses can include heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, which can become life-threatening if not treated promptly.

☀️ Heat Safety Tips:
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
• Limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
• Check on older adults, children, and those without air conditioning
• Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles

Know the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness and what to do if someone becomes sick from the heat.
