The South Dakota National Guard backpack program, one step closer to becoming a reality.

Just a few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to visit with 65 members of the South Dakota National Guard during their pre-deployment weekend conference, about the Children and Youth programs of The American Legion. Having the opportunity allowed me to touch briefly on various types of family and youth assistance programs available within the communities of these service members while they are away. Local Churches, food pantries, and other volunteer programs can be tapped into when an unexpected financial or food insecurity situations arise. In times of need; visiting with their local American Legion Post or other veteran organizations for assistance is one of the necessary steps to follow when seeking assistance

The primary reason for my visit with the National Guard that weekend was to offer them backpack of school supplies along with other donated school supplies provided by the Operation Homefront and the Dollar Tree. I was joined by the District 5 Auxiliary President, MaryJo B***r, as we handed out 50 backpacks of donated school supplies with an additional 50 backpacks of supplies that were split between the east and west river Family Readiness group of the SDNG. These donated items were well received.

Shortly after the Operation Homefront, Back-to-School backpack distribution event that was held at Ellsworth AFB in late July, I received a call from the Family Readiness group of the South Dakota Nation Guard (SDNG). After seeing and hearing about the of success of this event at Ellsworth, I was asked if I could attend a pre-deployment event to talk about the various types of assistance available to the young families in times of need. I was also asked about the idea of being able to provide other additional items that could assist the newer National Guard personnel by donating individual size toiletries, sock, shoes, and undergarments if possible as these items are forgotten or are not available to the younger personnel as they first join up with their units. It was decided that the Family Services group of the SDNG will set up a meeting with the leadership of The American Legion, Department of South Dakota, Operation Homefront, and other veterans service organizations, to see how we can all support the mission of our South Dakota National Guard.

Please stay tuned as we will be sharing more about this collaboration as project once more details are known.

Kind Regards,
Harry B***r

The Commander and Randy from Post 15 went to Wagner for their Labor Day parade. Met Patrice the Auxiliary President there so we got to ride in the trailer. It was a great time. The weather was perfect. Great day to be a veteran.
