At tonight's Board of Education meeting the Board will announce their new member as well as the proposed cuts to the budget as directed by the Republican members of the Town Council.

Although it was clear from the last vote the community wanted the cuts to come from the town side of the budget the Republican members of the Town Council directed the BOE to cut as well.

Yesterday the Republican Party posted this amazing AI generated graphic patting themselves on the back.

NO TAX INCREASE? LET’S TALK ABOUT THE WHOLE STORY.

The same Town Council majority now asking for applause over a “No Tax Increase Budget” is the same group that has controlled Town Hall for years while taxes continued to rise.

Now, on the eve of a referendum, they’re acting as if they’ve suddenly discovered fiscal responsibility.

Here’s what their slogan doesn’t tell you:

🔹 “No Tax Increase” comes with significant cuts to our schools.
While education takes the hit, raises and increases remain built into the town-side budget.

🔹 The Water & Sewer crisis didn’t happen overnight.
The same leadership now asking for your vote has yet to fully take responsibility for years of decisions that contributed to the situation.

🔹 One year without a tax increase doesn’t erase years of tax increases.
Residents have been paying more for years. Claiming victory after creating the problem isn’t leadership—it’s political marketing.

🔹 Families shouldn’t be forced to choose between responsible budgeting and quality education.
A balanced budget should mean shared sacrifice, not asking students, teachers, and parents to bear the burden while Town Hall protects itself.

Before you vote, ask yourself:

If this budget is so balanced, why are the biggest cuts aimed at our schools while town spending continues to grow?

Watertown deserves accountability, transparency, and leadership that takes responsibility for its record—not campaign slogans.

Look beyond the headline. Read the budget. Ask questions. Then vote.

Tonight's Watertown Town Council agenda is packed with important discussions that will impact our community. Council members will be addressing matters involving legal representation for the ongoing Water & Sewer dispute with the City of Waterbury, as well as reviewing proposed budget cuts and their potential effects on town services.

While these topics are significant and deserving of thoughtful consideration, there is something even more important weighing on the hearts of many in our community. The meeting will also include a moment of silence in memory of Michele McHugh.

As Watertown navigates important decisions about its future, it is fitting that we take a moment to pause and remember a dedicated public servant, neighbor, and friend who cared deeply about our town and its residents.

We encourage residents to stay informed, attend the meeting if possible, and join in honoring Michele's memory while engaging in the important conversations that help shape Watertown's future.

It is with profound sadness to hear of the sudden passing of Town Council Member Michele McHugh. Michele’s dedication to our community, her willingness to serve, and her commitment to the residents of Watertown will not be forgotten.

During this incredibly difficult time, we extend our deepest condolences to Jack, Jeff, family, friends, fellow council members, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her loss will be deeply felt throughout our town.

May we all keep Michele’s loved ones in our thoughts and prayers as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.

Join us tonight at the Senior Center at 7pm for this month’s Independent Party meeting as we come together to discuss the issues that matter most to our community.

This is an opportunity for residents to share ideas, ask questions, and have open conversations about the future of our town without a three minute time limit or an application to speak your mind.

Our meetings are not a secret and we encourage all to attend and speak about what matters to you.

Today, the Watertown-Oakville Independent Party is proud to march in the Memorial Day Parade in remembrance of the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the courage, service, and sacrifice of those who gave their lives defending our freedoms. As we march today, we do so with gratitude in our hearts and with deep respect for our fallen heroes and their families.

May we never forget those who served, those we lost, and the legacy they left behind. 🇺🇸

Tonight’s budget vote did not pass due to serious concerns from residents about the lack of clear and accurate information regarding the water and sewer issue.

Taxpayers deserve transparency, facts, and a full understanding of the financial impact before being asked to approve a budget. The community made it clear that more answers and accountability are needed moving forward.
