Soldiers' Monument & Saltonstall Plaza A project to repair, restore and conserve a monument to the Civil War soldiers and sailors from Watertown MA

The Soldiers' Monument, located in Saltonstall Park, Watertown MA was dedicated in 1889 in memory of those who served and those that died during the Civil War. A citizen wrote about this event to the editor of the Watertown MA Enterprise newspaper with the following words:

“Watertown is determined that the memory of the soldiers of the late war shall be honored and respected during future genera

tions.”

Now, in 2012, we face the fact that this honor and this respect are threatened. The conditions of the monument and the park plaza area are in disrepair and deterioration. While Watertown does care for those who have served our country through its veterans’ office and other support services, this historic statue is in poor condition and in need of your support.

Over the last weeks of rain, wind, snow, and clouds, the Park still serves as a refuge or birds and squirrels, who reluctantly share the space with children playing on the cannons.

WATERTOWN HONORS PARK WITH CHRISTMAS LIGHTS!

December 2019. Watertown has honored Saltonstall Plaza by installing brilliant Christmas lights on the large tress at the Plaza entrance. Next to the holiday lights at City Hall, these tree decorations invite people to visit the plaza and statue even on these cold winter days. A special Thanks to Mr. Gerald Mee and the Department of Public Works for their efforts to decorate the Park, Watertown Square, and many other locations throughout the town. Happy Holidays!

In the crisp fall air and under clear blue skies, Watertown residents gathered in Saltonstall Plaza on Veterans Day for the Rededication of the Soldiers’ Monument. The memorial statue was originally installed in 1889 to honor the citizens of the Town that served and died during the Civil War. Over the years, the monument fell into disrepair due to weather and vandalism.

Recognizing the need to restore the granite statue, residents Jon and Yasmina Spector approached Watertown officials with the idea for a restoration project, and it was fully endorsed by the Town Council. The collaborative effort managed by Jon Spector involved private fundraising, the receipt of a state grant for funds to restore Civil War memorials throughout Massachusetts, hiring a conservation and restoration company and a sculptor, and the participation of the Historical Society of Watertown, various Town departments, and the help of volunteers.

I went to the Plaza today and gazed again into the face of our lone soldier proudly standing watch once again, with dignity, over the memory of those who fell during the Civil War.
