This picture of Joseph P. Dwyer hangs on the wall inside our center. He is on our window outside the office, and on all of our flyers.
Sometimes when we see this picture we want to be like Joe; brave and determined to do the right thing even at the expense of ourselves, and at others, we know that we are the other Joe; the bewildered and confused, scared but moving, even if we don't know exactly what we are doing.
We are Joe, and Joe is us.
I am so very proud to be a part of the Joseph P. Dwyer Project for 8 years and to have met so many people from all over the state who epitomize the same intention and determination to the project who bears it's name. Just like Joe, we aren't always sure about exactly where we are going, or if we are doing it as well as we could or should be. All we know is that you have to have that kind of intention deep in your guts to do the right thing for the right reasons.

On this day 19 years ago, this photo of Joe Dwyer carrying an Iraqi boy to safety was taken and then published to news outlets across the world. It encapsulates Joe's intentions for joining the Army as a medic in the days after 9/11...he wanted to save lives.

We honor your memory every day, Joe, by doing all we can to save lives.

Remember. Remember Pearl Harbour, and remember the 7th of December as the day that will live in infamy. Remember what it started, and remember how much we paid as nations. Not just ours but every nation. It is good to remember.
But also remember to look at how far we have all come since then. How much we have accomplished since sitting in the rubble of a destroyed world and collectively said 'We don't want this anymore. For ourselves, and for our children, and for our children's children, we don't want this anymore."
Today will always be a day of infamy, but it is made all the more terrible if we fail to overcome it.
