On Tuesday, school district voters went to the polls to approve increased funding for 26 North Country libraries!

When voters come to the polls to approve library funding, it's because they understand the value the library provides to the community. A well-funded library is positioned to ensure the community thrives. Congratulations to all the libraries who had a successful vote on the school ballot!

Libraries are a gathering space in many small towns. In Sackets Harbor, librarian Octavia Walker says that role is especially important. The village is close to the Fort Drum military base, so young families are often moving in and out.

"Most new people will come here, get a library card," she says. Then, they get to know the community through the library. Walker gives families restaurant recommendations, helps people find an apartment, or the right church. "I mean, we pretty much know everything here," she laughs.

Walker first fell in love with Sackets Harbor when she was stationed at Fort Drum, and today, she says that background makes it easy to connect with many patrons.

Everything at the public library costs money, from the books, media, internet access, online tools, and classes we offer to paying the staff who are the beating heart of the organization.

A ballot referendum allows voters a direct voice in the funding process and is a sustainable way for libraries to ensure they can provide high-quality service for years to come.
