Did you hear the news? A few weeks ago, our 2/3 students were helping in the pollinator garden and found two oothecas. An ootheca is a protective, foamy egg case laid by adult female mantises in the late summer or fall. Each ootheca hardens into a styrofoam-like texture, sheltering anywhere from 50 to 400 tiny baby mantises through the winter until they hatch in the spring. Silly us - we thought the oothecas were old ones and left them in the entryway to look at and learn about. Yesterday we welcomed a few hundred praying mantises into the world, right here in our school's entrance.

They. Were. Everywhere.

Luckily, the second and third graders escorted them to their new home - OUTSIDE. We may still have a few friends hanging out inside our school...but you know us, all LEAP's creatures have a place in the choir!❤️

Yesterday was Miss Maggie's birthday! Apparently she now shares her special day with the 200 praying mantises that hatched in our school lobby. While the little insects were not serenaded for their special day, Maggie was! Thanks for the delicious macarons on your big day. And we hope you are enjoying your new praying mantis pets at home!🥰

LEAP Elementary School celebrated Wisconsin School Garden Day a week early. Wisconsin School Garden Day is a special day where schools celebrate learning in the garden, explore nature through hands-on activities and recognize the importance of gardens in helping us grow healthy food and care for our environment. We are so grateful for the wonderful green space, various gardens and outdoor learning environment we have here at LEAP!

Students moved through learning stations in the morning - making insect hotels, creating and enjoying garden to table snacks and building a dead hedge fence on school grounds. In the afternoon, some students planted our pumpkin patch, while others will plant corn tomorrow. Mrs. Lepperd joined in the fun and planned some entertaining garden themed music activities for our students as well.

Thank you to everyone that donated snacks or items for the day! We're blessed to have this school and land and relish the days we have left learning here together!

As many of you know, Angelina Ballerina came to us as a feeder rat. She was meant to be a tasty meal for our ball python Jack Tater. Little did she know she would be living a life of leisure and love in our 2nd and 3rd grade classroom. The lives of feeder rats average two years. Because they are bred for numbers, they are more suseptible to tumors, which is true of Angelina. Although she has been very happy and content, recently her tumors have rapidly increased in size. Angelina loves the students in our classroom - often climbing around the cage when she hears them enter the room in the morning. She really enjoys being part of our morning meetings and joining us outside at recess. Lately though, she lets us know when she needs some quiet time for herself. She has retreated to her tissue boxes a little more often, likely due to her tumors affecting her mobility. Last week our class decided to sing Angelina "her song" from the Spring Concert. They sang quietly and calmly letting her know we were thinking of her. It was love in a song.
Having animals in the classroom and school teaches so many lessons, but none is more important than how caring for an animal helps children understand the needs and feelings of others. Thank you, Angelina, for teaching us empathy and compassion!❤️
