The Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission provides educational programs on Solid Waste to schools, libraries and organizations within Black Hawk County! The Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission has entered into an agreement with the Black Hawk County Conservation Board to provide solid waste outreach education through the two-person staff of the Waste Trac Education Te

The goal of Waste Trac is to empower Black Hawk County residents with information, activities, and resources to reduce their waste and to make environmentally conscious choices in their daily lives. The two-person education team provides a wide variety of free recycling, composting, and waste reduction education programs throughout Black Hawk County at no charge to schools, youth groups, community organizations, and civic groups. Waste Trac programs can take place during a visit to their education center on Bluff St, at your school, or at your regular public meeting location. Walking tours of the Black Hawk County Landfill are also available. Schedule your tour or program today by calling 319-266-TRAC (8722) or by email at the Commission's website (WasteTrac.org). Waste Trac acts as the voice for the Commission through organizing and promoting Commission sponsored Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Drop-off Events for residents in Black Hawk County, Iowa. The two-person team also coordinates the “Recycle On The Go” Event Recycling Equipment Loan Program, answers questions from the public via the telephone help line (319-266-TRAC), and manages the Commission’s website (WasteTrac.org).

All the slots for the Spring Household Hazardous Waste Event are filled. Residents can monitor the registration page for cancellations. Do not show up without an appointment; you will be turned away.

Electronics can be recycled year-round at the Cedar Falls Transfer Station and Goodwill. For details, visit their websites. These options are open to all residents.

For Household Hazardous waste, options include using it as intended, checking with a friend or neighbor to see if they can use it, storing it until the August event, or solidifying and disposing of it with your normal trash.

Registration for the August HHW collection event will open in July.

According to Halmark, around 145 million cards are exchanged in the US each Valentine's Day, but where do they end up? Cards with plastic, foil, or glitter components are often not recyclable and are instead sent to the Black Hawk County Landfill. This Valentine's Day, offer alternatives such as eCards, plantable seed paper, thrifted cards, or handmade cards made from recycled materials.
