Meet Elise Hong-Miller, a dedicated leader from the East High Class of 2026. Elise describes her high school experience as Monumental, a journey defined by academic rigor and a commitment to personal growth.
ă…¤
Elise has utilized every opportunity at East, from the challenging International Baccalaureate (IB) program to her time with JROTC. Her favorite memory remains attending the JCLC summer camp, where she pushed her physical limits and built connections with students from across the region.
ă…¤
This fall, she’ll be heading to the University of Iowa to begin a 6-year Doctor of Pharmacy track.
Reflecting on how East High shaped her perspective, Elise shares:
"I have been able to work with people from a variety of backgrounds and learned that in order to get through things, you need to have fun and make the most of them. Being in the IB program, I have also harnessed valuable skills that will help me in my future endeavors, like time management and work ethic."
ă…¤
Elise encourages underclassmen to embrace the challenge and stay involved: "Never sell yourself short... stay involved throughout high school. Never be afraid to ask questions and put yourself out there."

Meet Cameron Joyce, a future engineer from the East High Class of 2026. Cameron describes his time as a Trojan as Dynamic, a fitting word for a student who successfully balanced rigorous academics with future-focused preparation.
ă…¤
Cameron’s journey at East was defined by the connections he made through specialized programs like Iowa Jobs for American Graduates (IJAG) and Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS). These opportunities helped him bridge the gap between high school and his upcoming transition to Iowa State University, where he plans to major in either Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.
ă…¤
While he is focused on the future, Cameron’s favorite memories remain rooted in the community spirit of the "Taste of East," a time he cherishes for the chance to connect with peers and local vendors in a relaxed environment. Regarding the importance of finding your path, Cameron says:
"East has helped me prepare for the future by giving me the chance to connect with many college preparation programs... which helped me plan out my future and connect me with people who can help build me up."
ă…¤
His advice to the underclassmen is a reminder to appreciate the here and now: "We are young, so it's important to make sure that we are preparing for our future by not disregarding our present. Take the time to relax and have a bit of fun."

Congratulations to the April Success Champion of the Month, Ms. Joelle Smith!

Read the kind words of Ms. Smith's students:
“She is always offering words of encouragement and pushing her students to try their best. Even if the student she is speaking to isn't doing very well at their tasks, she allows them time to remember that they are trying their hardest to do what they can while still letting them know that they could improve. She's extremely nice and genuinely always seems to care.” -Braniya Grundy

“Smith works harder than any teacher I've seen. She plans COUNTLESS events within such big time crunches and it's very impressive. She always does what's best for her students. She can get a class of 65+ students to all listen to her with minimal effort; that's impressive." -Jared J. Gibson

“She inspires people to become great, through music. She has good humor all around everywhere around the room, shows good spirit wherever you find her and overall a great teacher”. -Juan Ramirez Garcia

“Ms smith have given me chances that everyone thought i couldn't risk, she believed in me to get better at practicing color guard and even made an exception to let me go on the trip to tennessee she believed in me that I could catch up to the others because i wasn't able to go the the first week of band camp and i thank and love her so much for that so ms. smith deserves to be the champion for being the best ever” -Allyanna hopkins

“Very helpful to my musical development” - noah buss

Every person at our school matters and we can each make a difference in each other's lives. We are fortunate to have teachers like Ms. Smith and students like Braniya, Jared, Juan, Allyanna, and Noah among us. Let's follow their lead and each do our part to support each other and help lighten someone else's load. :)

Meet Michael Avina, a standout member of the Class of 2026 and this year’s Valedictorian at East High School. Known for his wit and academic excellence, Michael describes his journey as a Trojan in one word: Triumphant.

A strong sense of community defined Michael’s time at East High. Whether he was in the classroom or performing his stand-up comedy routine—his favorite high school memory—he felt empowered by those around him. After graduation, Michael plans to take his storytelling talents to college, where he will study screenwriting with the goal of becoming a professional screenwriter. Huge news! He’s officially headed to USC on a scholarship!

Reflecting on the support system that helped him reach the top of his class, Michael shares:
"Being at East, I was surrounded by supportive friends and teachers who actually cared about my interests and success. There was never a time when I felt like I had nobody to turn to for help."
Before he heads off to the writers' room, Michael has a simple but powerful message for the underclassmen following in his footsteps: "You are not too cool to have fun. Be different. Be weird."

Meet Siyanna Cody, a driven student-athlete and a prominent voice in the East High Class of 2026. For Siyanna, her time as a Trojan has been nothing short of unforgettable, highlighted by the honor of being crowned East High’s Homecoming Queen.
ă…¤
Beyond the titles, Siyanna credits East High with providing the platform she needed to find her voice. Through the school’s various outlets and a supportive community of mentors and peers, she has learned to represent herself with confidence and authenticity.
ă…¤
Siyanna’s next chapter will take her to the prestigious Howard University, where she plans to major in Political Science on a pre-law track. Reflecting on her journey, she shares:
"East High presented me with many opportunities and outlets that helped me achieve success. Without East High, I wouldn’t have been able to grow as a young individual and represent myself in an unapologetic manner throughout my community."
ă…¤
Her parting wisdom for the underclassmen is a testament to her own tenacity: "Never let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. Always follow your dreams, and do what you need to in order to accomplish your goals."
