It is with great sorrow that I must inform you that 2019's haunt has been CANCELED. Our entire crew was snuffed out in a freak accident while preparing for this year's festivities. In fifteen years, surrounded by guillotines, electric chairs, exposed wires, industrial chemicals, mold, rust, wild animals, raw sewage, and curses both Old World and New, we've never had any problems until now.

I'm sure there are other haunts out there that may attempt to fill the void. I'm not going to advertise for them. That's what the Google and the Facebook are for.

Goodbye. Thanks for all the support. Que sera, sera and all that.

Well, we got banned from putting up flyers at Hickory Flat school because of "satanic" imagery. However, I'd like to point out that nothing in our advertisements is satanic. Many of the symbols we use are meant to look sinister, but they are mostly meaningless or borrowed from obscure occultists whose beliefs were...unconventional, but not outright satanic. The glyph we used on our flyer this year is a variation of a symbol used by the French priest and occultist Jean Paul Subere. He designed the glyph in 1717 and its original purpose has been lost to time. It appears to be a combination of the astrological symbols for Mercury and Venus with the addition of the oft-maligned pentangle. Though Subere's purpose for the glyph remains a mystery, what survives of his writings has revealed that he was inspired by the Elizabethan alchemist John Dee and his glyph, the Monas Hieroglyphica. Subere promised in a letter to a friend, Tolvaire de Touraine, that he would explain the symbol in what should have been his magnum opus. Unfortunately, Subere disappeared before the work was published, and Tolvaire never found the original manuscript. It was rumored that Subere ran afoul of the newly formed Freemasons and was killed before he could reveal forbidden knowledge. Other rumors suggest he was spirited away by the Rosicrucians or kidnapped by Frederick the Great to be his personal adviser on matters esoteric. The Church, though a regular player in these types of affairs, was largely uninterested in Subere. No censures or admonishments exist in any church records to indicate Subere ever angered his superiors. Had the Church publicly opposed him, he might not have fallen into such obscurity. So let us give him a little shout out right here.

Every year as we’re preparing for the haunted house, we joke that the place is really haunted. We see and hear a lot of unexplained stuff down there. So this year I decided to do a little digging and see if I could uncover the source of these odd disturbances. What I found was shocking:

The first white settlers fought with the Chickasaw and dealt them a heavy blow. Chief Minko prayed to Inki Abu, the One Above All, for divine aid. The white man continued to violently encroach upon Chickasaw land, and Minko grew impatient. Against the wishes of his advisors, he decided to appeal to the Christian God. Still the white man came. Thinking his own god has abandoned him and that the white man’s god would not be swayed, Minko sought help from the enemy of the Christian God—Old Scratch! The Devil was all too willing to make a deal, but he required that Minko sacrifice his daughter in a bizarre ritual. Human sacrifice was alien and abhorrent to the Chickasaw, but Minko did as the Devil commanded. The Chickasaw were able to hold the white man at bay for several years, but Minko’s advisors and closest friends learned of his evil dealings and turned against him, killing him on the eve of an important battle. The Chickasaw, already weakened by constant war with the Choctaw, were easily defeated. Minko’s successors decided to cooperate with the white man to ensure their survival. Their participation in the slave trade and knowledge of the region’s natural resources kept them safe for awhile, but eventually the white man deemed them useless. The white settlers paid the Chickasaws a meager sum for their land and had them relocated to Oklahoma. Many died along the way.

The most interesting part of all this? The spot where Minko sacrificed his daughter—the same place where now sits the Lodge at Wall Doxey State Park! Add some Civil War ghosts and a murder at one of the cabins on the park, and we’ve got the perfect recipe for a spectacular haunt.

This year’s flyer. Sorry it took so long. I’ll have to spend more time on advertising and less on demon summoning, I guess.

We've closed down for another year. Had a rough start fri, but sat more than made up for it. Only a couple of possessions, seizures, mental breakdowns, and missing persons this time around.

Well, the cops have taken statements from everybody and finally released us all to go home. I apologize to all the patrons and participants of this year's haunted house. I can't imagine what kind of therapy some of these kids will require. It's certainly taken a toll on me. The things I've witnessed tonight will haunt my dreams for the rest of my life...
