Have you ever wished you could talk to someone who truly gets it?

Certified Peer Support Providers are an important part of Vermont’s mental health system of care. They use their own lived experience with mental health challenges to support others through connection, understanding, and mutual respect while helping people build confidence and advocate for themselves.

For , we spoke with Melissa Bemis, Peer Support Coordinator at Clara Martin Center, about the impact of peer support and what she would tell someone interested in entering the field.

In Vermont, peer support providers like Melissa work across the mental health system in community mental health agencies, hospitals, peer-run programs and respites, crisis services, and recovery organizations throughout the state.

Rowland’s journey to nursing brought him through many different fields— and we’re so glad it led him to Vermont Psychiatric Care Hospital!

Before becoming a nurse, he worked in invasive species management as an environmental scientist, served as a medic in the National Guard, and worked as an EMT. Each step brought new experiences that ultimately led him to the work he does today.

What does mental health have to do with military readiness? A lot, according to Air Force Major General Henry Harder Jr.

In our latest Mental Health Awareness Month newsletter, we spoke with Major General Harder, Adjutant General of the Vermont National Guard, about the Governor’s Challenge — a statewide effort focused on preventing su***de among service members, veterans, and their families.

The Governor’s Challenge brings together organizations across the state to reduce stigma around asking for help and make sure people can access support before a crisis becomes urgent.

As Major General Harder shared, “Mental health is readiness.”
