At 14:07 Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Team was dispatched along with our ambulance to the Perry Hill mountain bike trails for a report of a mountain biker with significant injury from downhill fall. Arriving on scene first, Waterbury Ambulance crew members were able to talk with one of the riders in the injured persons party and gave an accurate location that placed the patient deep into the Perry Hill trail network.
Backcountry Rescue members assembled along with our UTV and equipment at the trailhead. A 2-person hasty team was dropped about 3/4 mile from the patient via UTV. Patient contact was made by the hasty team; after completing a medical assessment, the hasty team used a full body splint and prepared the patient for transport.
An additional team of rescuers were shuttled to a closer access point for the incident, Interstate 89, and deployed to the patient. Once the additional rescuers reached the patient, they loaded them into the stokes litter and began the extrication. Given the position on the trail network, the most direct route was to bring the patient down and bushwhack back to the awaiting ambulance on Interstate 89.
Care was transferred to the ambulance crew and rescuers quickly cleared from the interstate. In total 14 backcountry team members participated on the call. The incident was declared complete at 16:45.
