Mayor Pernerewski and Board of Aldermen President Digiovancarlo Announce Rescheduling of February 23 Board Meeting

Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. and Board of Aldermen President Michael Digiovancarlo announced today that the regular meeting of the Board of Aldermen scheduled for Monday, February 23 at 6:00 p.m. has been canceled due to a significant winter storm expected to impact the region.

The meeting will instead be held as a Special Meeting on Wednesday, February 25 at 6:00 p.m.

Forecasters are calling for heavy snowfall, potentially exceeding a foot in some areas, along with strong wind gusts that could create hazardous travel conditions, blowing snow, and possible power outages.

“With a major winter storm approaching, our top priority is the safety of our residents, city staff, and elected officials,” said Mayor Pernerewski. “Rescheduling the meeting allows everyone to remain off the roads and ensures our public works and emergency personnel can focus fully on storm response.”

Board of Aldermen President Digiovancarlo added, “We appreciate the public’s understanding as we take proactive steps to keep our community safe. We encourage residents to monitor official city communications for updates as the storm approaches.”

Residents are urged to use caution and limit travel during the storm.

The City of Waterbury is pleased to announce that Thomaston Avenue has reopened to traffic as of approximately 7:45 p.m. this evening following the completion of final paving and required safety checks. The reopening marks the conclusion of emergency repair and restoration work stemming from the December 2025 municipal water main failure.

The incident began on December 12, 2025, with the failure of a 36-inch transmission water main on Thomaston Avenue. The break resulted in a system wide loss of water pressure and required an immediate emergency response, extensive excavation, and complex repairs. Water service was restored in phases as system integrity and pressure were stabilized and verified.

Once underground repairs were completed, crews transitioned to roadway restoration. Final paving operations were completed today, allowing Thomaston Avenue to be safely reopened and bringing this project to full completion.

“This reopening represents the successful conclusion of a challenging and highly technical emergency response,” said Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. “I am grateful to our residents and businesses for their patience and to the dedicated crews and contractors who worked through difficult conditions to restore this critical infrastructure.”

Water Superintendent Brad Malay highlighted the significance of reaching this final milestone. “Restoring this transmission main required careful coordination, constant monitoring, and disciplined ex*****on at every stage,” said Malay. “Completing the final paving and reopening the roadway reflects the professionalism and commitment of everyone involved in bringing the system back to full operation.”

The City of Waterbury will continue to evaluate system performance and advance infrastructure planning efforts focused on strengthening reliability and reducing the likelihood of future large scale service disruptions.
