🚑 Celebrating National EMS Week 2026: May 17–23 🚑

This year’s national theme is "Improving Outcomes, Together," and it speaks perfectly to the daily mission here at Northwest CT Public Safety.

Before an ambulance ever arrives on scene, a critical chain of survival begins right here in our communications center. Every successful outcome relies on seamless partnership; from our telecommunicators answering the initial call and providing emergency instruction, to the dedicated EMTs and Paramedics on the front lines delivering life-saving care.

We are incredibly proud to partner with and dispatch for the phenomenal EMS agencies across our region who safeguard our communities 24/7/365.

To all the EMTs, Paramedics, and EMS professionals who dedicate their lives to this vital work: thank you for your skill, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to patient care. We are honored to be the voice on the other end of your radio.

This week, as we observe National Telecommunicator Week, we want to take a moment to shine a light on the incredible team right here at NWCTPS Communication Center and all of our colleagues across the country.

Our telecommunicators are truly The Lifeline Behind the Call. When seconds count, they are the first voice you hear, the steady hand that coordinates help, provides life-saving instructions, and ensures our field responders arrive safely.

It’s easy for this critical work to go unsung because it’s often unseen, but we see it every single day. The commitment, the expertise, and the genuine compassion they bring to the job make all the difference for our communities.

To our NWCTPS staff and all public safety telecommunicators: Thank you for your unwavering service. We see you, we value you, and we thank you.

Happy National Telecommunicator Week!

Northwest is heartbroken to learn of the tragic loss of our former dispatcher, Felisha Matthews, and her two daughters, Mileena and Ava. She served with such dedication years ago. Our thoughts are with her family, and with our current and former fellow coworkers and dispatchers who are mourning this loss.

We’re incredibly proud of our dispatcher who provided critical instructions and calm support during this morning’s delivery. It’s moments like these that remind us how important every link in the chain is. Amazing teamwork by everyone involved. Congratulations to the family on their new baby boy!

Kudos to the exceptional team of providers who contributed to the successful delivery of a healthy baby boy this morning, right here in Bethlehem! Northwest Connecticut Public Safety Communication Center played an instrumental role in this process, along with Bethlehem Volunteer Fire Department, Hatzalah EMS, and Connecticut State Police - Troop L Litchfield. Great team work by all!

On August 18th, our team at Northwest CT Public Safety (NWCTPS) worked tirelessly to support the communities of Seymour, Oxford, Naugatuck, Middlebury, Woodbury, Southbury, and beyond. With 574 emergency and 532 non-emergency calls, we faced an incredibly high volume—averaging 87 calls per hour at the height of the storm. We're grateful for our dedicated staff, many of whom live in the areas impacted, and the resilience of our communities and services during such a challenging time.

As a regional dispatch center, we were able to efficiently bring in mutual aid from towns less impacted by the storm, ensuring that help was always available where it was needed most. As we move forward, we will rebuild together as a community, and NWCTPS will continue to support everyone throughout the process. Stay safe, and remember we're always here when you need us. 💙

Today begins National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week, and we want to recognize the critical work our call takers and dispatchers do 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are the first point of contact for callers in emergency situations. They are the calm voice on the other end of the phone reassuring callers that they are not alone and that help is on the way, all while ensuring officers receive needed information to respond.

Their composure and expertise as the "first" first responders is admirable. Whether it is a police, fire or medical emergency, they work hard to get the needed services provided as quickly as possible. They perform an invaluable job.

Please join us in recognizing our telecommunicators for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to service.
