This past Friday and Saturday, Downtown Waterbury came alive as residents, families, community organizations, and local leaders gathered to celebrate Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, it serves as a celebration of freedom, resilience, culture, and the continued pursuit of equality for all.

Throughout the weekend, attendees enjoyed live performances, educational exhibits, local vendors, and opportunities to reflect on our nation's history while celebrating the diversity that makes our community strong.

Thank you to all of the organizers, volunteers, performers, vendors, and residents who helped make this year's Juneteenth celebration a success. Events like these bring our community together, strengthen understanding, and remind us of the importance of honoring our shared history.

Welcome to the Waterbury Police Department!

We are proud to welcome two new officers who were officially sworn in as lateral transfers and have joined the ranks of the Waterbury Police Department.

Officer Obed Dishmey, who joins us from Florida, and Officer Cole DeBeradinis, who comes to Waterbury from Darien, Connecticut, took the oath of office and officially became members of our department.

Their addition brings the Waterbury Police Department's sworn member count to 307 officers, further strengthening our ability to serve and protect the residents of our city.

Please join us in welcoming Officers Dishmey and DeBeradinis to the Waterbury Police Department and wishing them continued success and safety as they begin this new chapter of their law enforcement careers.

Congratulations and welcome to the team. May God bless and protect you as you protect and serve the people of Waterbury.

Congratulations to the members of the Waterbury Police Department who were promoted in recognition of their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving the residents of Waterbury.

Lt. Andrea D'Agostino was promoted to Captain
Detective Jason Seeger was promoted to Sergeant
Officer Wilfredo Gonzalez was promoted to Sergeant
Officer Illyrian Zulali was promoted to Detective

A particularly meaningful moment of the evening was the promotion of Captain Andrea D'Agostino. Her promotion marks the first time in more than 20 years that a woman has attained the rank of Captain in the Waterbury Police Department. The only other woman to hold the rank was Captain Kathy Wilson, making this an important milestone in the department's history.

We congratulate Captain D'Agostino, Sergeants Seeger and Gonzalez, and Detective Zulali on this well-deserved achievement and thank them for their continued service to the City of Waterbury.

May God bless and protect each of you as you continue to protect and serve the residents of our city.

What a way to end the school year!

This morning, four outstanding Waterbury Public Schools students were recognized through the Ride 2 Success Attendance Raffle for their exceptional attendance during the 2025-2026 school year.

After a special recognition ceremony with Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. and Superintendent Dr. Darren Schwartz, the students were treated to an unforgettable ride to school in City of Waterbury vehicles, complete with lights and sirens. Each student was able to bring a friend along for the experience.

The look of pure joy on their faces said it all. From climbing into a fire truck, riding in a police cruiser, or traveling with the Mayor, this was more than just a ride to school. It was a celebration of hard work, commitment, and the importance of showing up every day.

Congratulations to Michael Coleman, Joniris De Los Angeles, Leah Parra-Hernandez, and Azania Mokgosi. Your dedication to your education has not gone unnoticed, and today's experience is one we hope you will remember for years to come.

Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. and the City of Waterbury Engineering Department are pleased to announce that the city's 2026 Milling and Paving Program will begin later this month.

The city has awarded a $10 million contract to Tilcon Connecticut, Inc. of New Britain to perform roadway and parking lot rehabilitation projects at various locations throughout Waterbury. The program is part of the city's ongoing, multi-year investment in improving and modernizing Waterbury's transportation infrastructure. Last year, the city invested approximately $5.5 million in milling and paving projects. This year's $10 million program nearly doubles that investment, allowing the city to address more roadways and accelerate needed infrastructure improvements. In addition to roadway improvements, the project will include upgrades to adjacent sidewalks to enhance accessibility and ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

"Over the past several weeks, we have announced significant investments in roads, sidewalks, drainage improvements, and other critical infrastructure projects throughout our city," said Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. "This year's $10 million paving program nearly doubles last year's investment and is another important step in our ongoing effort to improve the condition of our streets, enhance accessibility, and make long-term investments that benefit residents in every neighborhood. By continuing to address infrastructure needs today, we are building a stronger Waterbury for the future."
