Field report from CLiF Program Manager Cassie Willner:

"Jason Chin worked his magic (yet again) today at Berlin Elementary School for their Year of the Book kickoff. One student offered Jason this feedback: 'I really like your creative thinking!'

After Jason’s presentations, every student in grades preK–6 got to choose their first free book--one of eight they’ll take home this year, along with lots of fun events and literacy support for the school."

Library cards > red cards.
🚩 🚩 🚩

🚩 “Graphic novels aren’t real books.”
Comics, manga, graphic novels, audiobooks...they ALL count.

🚩“You can’t pick that book. Pick this one.”
When kids choose their own books, they're more likely to read for pleasure.

🚩“That book is too easy for you.”
It's not about levels. It's about enjoyment.

🚩“You already read that. Read something new!”
There's nothing wrong with revisiting old favorites.

🚩"You started it; now you have to finish it."
Not every book is a great fit! Reading shouldn't feel like a chore.

Fun fact: Children’s books contain 50 percent more rare or uncommon words than everyday conversation, TV, or radio. Reading helps kids build their vocabularies and teaches them to understand new words in context. 📚🧠✨
